3D Minecraft Fondant Birthday Cake

Minecraft is a game where you can explore, create, discover, mine and craft a whole world. In the game it takes patience to build anything. This cake is the same it takes 1,280 tiny fondant squares to make this 3D minecraft logo.

minecraft cake instructions

To start with you will need to make a cake.  You can use a packet mix or if you’d prefer homemade like I do, then try either the vanilla cake recipe or the chocolate mud cake.  Depending on the depth of your cake tin you will need to make two or three square cakes and then stack them on top of each other, sandwiched with buttercream to make a cube.

The cake I made once trimmed down, before icing was 15cm (5.91 inches) x 15cm (5.91 inches)

Trim down the edges to get an exactly square shape slightly smaller than your template and then smother in buttercream (buttercream recipes are here).

Use paper towel to smooth off you sides and sharpen your corners. See the video for a demonstration on how to do this and the rest of the cake.

You can purchase fondant or make your own, fondant recipe is here. Then you will need to colour it into your greens, browns and grey. If you have not worked with fondant before there is a post on fondant basics here.  Allow approx 200g (7.05 ounces) of fondant for each colour.

Print the side template below. Cover it in baking paper and roll out one of your colours to the size of the white square. Using a pizza cutter cut strips and then turn to cut squares. The lines in the blue section will act as you guidelines for this. Repeat with all of your colours.

Click on the link below to download the block template free.

Take another piece of baking paper and lightly grease using butter or margarine or crisco, wipe off any excess with a paper towel. Place one edge of the paper along one edge of the white square on your template and sticky tape into position. Then line up your squares one row at a time to cover the white area, remember to add green squares at the top.

Lightly dampen the fondant using a paintbrush. Slide your baking paper onto something firm but thin, like cardboard. Line up the bottom edge with the base of the cake and then lift up and push into place. Remove the cardboard and use a fondant smoother to flatten, then peel off the baking paper. When you do the top green section do not put water on it, instead put the cardboard on top of it, and flip it over. Then put in position on the cake and slide the cardboard out of the way. Then finish the other sides in the same manner as the first.

If you have left over fondant you can make more squares and use on pieces of cake or chocolate honeycomb squares.

  1. Sorry – I can’t attach the pic!!!!!!!!

    • 🙁 what was the reason it gave for not uploading? was it too big?

      • No explanation – just wouldn’t do it.

  2. Here is my cake that I did using your tutorial. I used Wilton cake lifters (upside down) to apply the sides to the cake. It was thin and had the angle to get it on the cake nicely. My cake wound up being a little bigger than the grid template because of the icing. I should have checked the size and adjusted accordingly. I just filled in any spaces. I applied the top directly to the cake. Thanks for an awesome tutorial!!!! (I used mini minecraft toys for the top)

  3. Making this tomorrow for my 9 year old. Just wondering how much fondant I would need if I am buying it? I have never worked with it before. thanks!!

    • allow 200g for each colour

  4. Hi Ann,
Once again you’re being inspiritional! Question…what do you think about this…after you’ve assembled your squares on the grid, instead of brushing with water what about a thinned royal icing????? I’m thinking that the royal icing would harden and the squares would not move. I’m trying this cake tomorrow and I wanted to get you thought about this. Thanks so much.

    • hi kerrie, fondant gets sticky when it is dampened so creates like an icing on its own.

      • Love this tutorial. Going to try this for my sons cub scout bakeoff to raise money for our scouts. Will post pics, but only if it comes out good!

  5. its amazing!

  6. THANK YOU!!!!!!
I really didn’t think I was going to be able to pull this off for my 9 years old son’s birthday party tomorrow but thanks to you I DID IT!!!!!!
I watched your video but I have never used fondant before so I was a little concerned. I watched your fondant basics video & decided it was worth a try. Having your video to refer to while constructing the cake & the template was invaluable -THANK YOU again. I have one very, very happy little boy.

    • Well done toni 😀

  7. This is my version of a Minecraft cake. Very last minute order in chocolate cake and ganache.

    • looks great lia, increasing block sizes would definitely speed up the process 😀

  8. Hi Ann,
My little brother wants me to make a SpongeBob cake but I’m a beginner. So I was wondering if you could post a SpongeBob cake thanks.

  9. Thanks so much for this great resource. I made my version of this today. I had a bit of trouble with my pieces drying as I made them ahead of time and they were somewhat like marbles flying off the paper but I managed to pull off the vibe. The choc cake was so easy to make and shape, tasted good too. Just have to come up with a recipe for all my off cut’s now.

    • great job michelle, looks amazing

  10. Hello, I am going to attempt to make this Minecraft cake for my neighbors birthday, i had a few questions:

Am i able to make the fondant squares ahead of time? Where would i put them, in the fridge? How long do they last for?

After i create the cake and put the buttercream icing on it what can i do to save it for the next day for the squares?

As my cake is finished can i just put the cake in the fridge ready to be delivered the next day?

    Thank you!

  11. I really like youtube nonetheless it does have some bad things on it. Like with illegal material and things.

    • Hi Brooke, if you ever see a youtube video that has inappropriate content click on the little flag just below the video to report it, it will come up with a list of options as to why it needs reporting. If a channel gets more than 3 strikes (ie 3 videos taken down for violating youtube policies) then the channel will be removed altogether.

  12. I will try to make this on my nephew’s birthday. He’s a big fan of minecraft. 🙂

  13. I have my fingers crossed you still check this post for comments 🙂 I have made all of my layers for the cake today. It is chocolate and VERY moist. I don’t need the cake until Saturday ( so 2.5 more days) all parts are done I just need to put it together. So which would be best to have the cake still fresh… Freeze the layers to thaw and assemble Friday? They are not iced yet. Or put the whole cake together and refrigerate? I know you said somewhere the fondant will sweat if I do that. Not sure which is best. Thanks so much for making this tutorial and providing the template!

    • Well here it is… I didn’t get the sides as flush as they should have been and it kind of shrunk after refrigerating so I had to cut some off the bottom.

      • Fantastic Jen, Happy birthday Emily! You have done such a good job

    • hi jen, sorry for that late reply I have gotten behind on comments. If you are making again then I would assemble and put in the fridge

    • Awesome Mara, Happy Birthday to your son

  16. This was my first attempt at anything like this and using your guide I was able to make this for my son’s 13th Birthday party! I had a hard time converting everything to US measurements and keeping all the little fondant pieces together so I just started freestyling it.. I think it still turned out pretty cool! Thanks for your help!

  17. I love your blog and I love all your recipes but after looking at some of your buttercream recipes I had one question. What is icing sugar? Is it just powdered sugar?

  18. And I play minecraft LIKE A BOSS!!!!!!

  19. I like it

  20. Hey Ann,

My husbands birthday is this Saturday, and I was just curious. If I made this cake ahead of time and fully decorated it and refrigerated it, would that be a bad idea? Thanks for your help in advance.

    • I wouldn’t make it any further ahead than a couple of days.
