One Direction Cake with Logo on the inside

one direction cake how to recipe

After being inundated with comments on my YouTube channel from One Direction fans, I finally relented and designed a cake with the 1D logo on top and as well as inside.

For your One Direction cake you will need:

* 2 packets vanilla cake baked in a 16x24cm (9.45 inches) tin
* 1 packet red velvet cake
* cream cheese frosting – click to open recipe in new window (or you can use the frostings that came with packet cakes)
* italian meringue frosting – click to open recipe in new window (or you can cover in white fondant)
*red fondant  (there is a post on fondant basics here)

You are basically going to make the cake on its side, layering it up and then flip it the right way up onto a cake platter.  Print out the overall cutting and layout guide above and then watch the video below for step by step instructions.

One Direction Cake Decoration

Once you have made the inside you can either cover the cake in white fondant or in italian meringue frosting, one of my favorite frostings.  To make the logo on top print out the 1D logo in a size that fits on your cake, cut it out and use that as a template to cut out your red fondant.  Here is a link to their logo in various sizes, one direction cake logo template, I used the middle size.  Add to the top of your cake and you are ready for the party.

  1. Hi Ann!
I followed each direction and made the cakes but I think they got a little more fluffy than necessary, so, I had a lot of trouble setting the cake, and as soon as I finished, while starting to cover it with the icing, Puf! everything came down! I catched it with my hands on the air, it didn´t touch the floor so we had coffee & broken cake for four days or so. But my nine year old girl didn´t get to see her dream cake come true. =(

    • oh no rachel that sound so sad 🙁

I was just wondering how ro reduce the size of the cake?

    • Hi daniela, this cake would be very difficult to make in a smaller size

  10. Love this cake- I am going to make it this week and just wondered how long you baked the red velvet cake and the white cake for at what temp.

    Thank you!

    • hi laura, I baked them until a skewer inserted into the centre came out clean. Sorry i can’t remember the times

  11. I want to make this so bad for my birthday! I am a huge Directioner and I have a tradition of baking my own cake every year…looks intimidating since I’m seriously bad with a knife! Any more tips on cutting those rounds for the D? If you know what I’m talking about…thank you!!

  12. Thank you! Mine doesn’t look as nice as yours but the instructions are excellent and I have a very, very happy 10 year old!!

    • wonderful to hear happy birthday to your 10 year old

  13. Would this be possible on a 13″x9″ pan or a square pan?

    • Hi Alyce yes if you use the 13″x9″ pan it is the same proportions as the 16cmx22cm pan just bigger. You will obviously need to increase the amount of cake mixture accordingly (the pan is nearly double the volume).

  14. Awsome

  15. woow kool

  16. Sorry the i is capital in my name

  17. I already started making Italian meringue frosting but I don’t have cream of tartar. Is there a replacement for it, can I leave it out, or do I really really need it? Thanks sooooo much! I love your website and it has helped me learn so very much, my cousin will absolutely LOVE this cake!!

    • hi Claire, you can leave the cream of tartar out if you don’t have it.

  18. I wanted to make this cake but instead of the 1D logo I wanted to make the number 5 inside the cake. I figure it is similiar to the 1D but just have to tweak it a little. Any suggestions? Please help?

  19. Genius!

  20. Thanks for the cake

    • Nice job
