3D jelly spiders and flowers dessert jello recipe

IMG_6028

Arachnophobia or fear of spiders affects nearly one third of the population, add to that the fear of needles and this is one scary post.  These flowers and spiders are made by injecting a milk based gelatin mixture into a clear jelly.

Gelatine flowers have their origins in Mexico where they are called gelatina floral.  The spiders originated in my kitchen after my boys were not impressed with ‘pretty’ jellies.  Watch the video below for directions on how to make these amazing edible 3D creations.

Equipment that I used:
Needle: hypodermic nipro flomax 19G X 38MM
Syringe: 10mL (0.34 fluid ounces) luer lock latex free  (if you buy more than one you will not have to wash it out every time you want a different colour, I purchased these and the needles on ebay)
Plastic and metal spoons and flat firm plastic cut to a petal shape
Optional a small toy spider or a carrot carved into shape

Clear jello recipe

1 Litre or 4 cups water
300g (10.58 ounces) or 1 1/3 cup plus 2 tsp sugar
1/4 tsp citric acid (or other clear flavoring)
56g (1.98 ounces) or 4 Tbsp powdered gelatine
additional 1 cup or 250ml cold water

Mix together the gelatine and 1 cup of cold water and leave to absorb the water.

Place the 1L (0.26 gallons) water, sugar and citric acid into a saucepan and heat until sugar is dissolved.

Stir through the gelatine until it dissolves and then pour into container and leave in the fridge to set.

Milk based Jello recipe for the pattern

20g (0.71 ounces) or 2 tablespoons gelatine
125millilitres (4.23 fluid ounces) or 1/2 cup water
395g (13.93 ounces) tin sweetened condensed milk
Full cream milk add to the sweetened condensed milk to make a total of 500millilitres (16.91 fluid ounces) or 2 cups liquid.
Food colours (pink, blue, yellow) & cocoa powder or dark chocolate to make brown

Mix together the gelatine and cold water and leave to swell.

Heat the sweetened condensed milk and milk in a saucepan until it just starts to boil.  Remove from heat and stir through the gelatine until it is melted.  Split into smaller bowls to colour.  If the mixture sets before you’re ready to use it – remelt in the microwave or on the stovetop.

  1. Dear Ann,
Thank you for sharing you amazing ideas with all of us.
I have four kids I am sure they are going to love them.
Could you please send me the link for the plastic containers that you use for the jelly [flower/bugs] molds.
    Kind Regards Marisa

  2. Hey Ann, i was wondering if you could use the chocolate flowers from one of you other posts and suspend them in the clear jelly before it sets, or would they be too delicate?

    • hi emily, i think that they would be too delicate for this

  3. Hi, I wanted to try and make this for my little sister’s birthday but I was wondering if i had to use citric acid? what could I use to substitute for it? And where could I buy citric acid?

    • hi sharmus you can use any clear essence to flavour the jelly instead

    • The citric acid is to make the jello clear. If you don’t use it, the jello will have a yellowish color to it. To flavor the clear jello just use sugar but you still have to add the citric acid or it will look yellowish. If you use different flavors it will turn the clear jell ow different colors depending on the flavor. Eg. Grape will make the jello a slight purple, watermelon a slight pink ect.

      • thanks Jose 😀

  4. Hi!
My name is Sadie and I’m a highschooler. In my AP art class we were assigned to make something out of a food medium! I was looking on youtube when I found these and were amazed! I made them and my teacher and my class mates loved them!!! Thanks for the recipe!!!

    Sadie

    • That’s great Sadi 😀

  5. I tried making some the other day and I had loads of fun making them!
But I had problems getting the jelly out of the cupcake holders. So much so I ended up destroying what I made! Dx
How do I get the jelly out without ruining the jelly and the plastic cupcake holders?

    • Spray some cooking spray into the mold before adding the jello. Once the jello hardens place the mold in a warm water bath to melt a little bit of the jello and it will come out easily from the mold.

      • 😀

  6. Hi, I just made a batch of these and they looked lovely. But when you smell it, there is still the smell of gelatin present and it smells really bad. I followed the amount in the recipe exactly. Did I do anything wrong, or is the problem from the gelatin I used? I am in Melbourne and used the Ward’s brand gelatine I found in coles. Help please, because I think I have to throw a whole batch away because of the smell…

  7. Hi Ann,

I love all the stuff you make!! Where did you buy your plastic containers from? I’ve looked on eBay for dome cupcake containers with hinges but everything is either a complete dome but unhinged therefore it wouldn’t balance when you go to set the jelly in the fridge or the dome part is flat on top meaning you would get a flat top not a proper dome like yours

    • Hi Alissa I purchased from seller rizqi_misya she doesn’t have any listed at the moment but perhaps you cauld send her a msg on ebay and ask if she has any more they were listed as DOME CUPCAKE CAKE SHOWER PARTY FAVOR BOX CONTAINER

      • Thanks so much Ann!! I can’t wait to try making these!! 🙂

  8. Hi Ann,
i am gr8 admirer of ur work n creation … n this 1 was out of the world … HAtzz of to u ….
    i will surely try this1

  9. These are simply amazing.
Do you please have any tip on how to get it out if you make it in a glass bowl?
I made one with a pirates tresure chest in it to go with my pitare themed cupcakes. It looks good but I have no idea how to get it out of the glass bowl without ruining it. Please help 🙂

    • You could try sitting the bottom of the bowl into very hot water for a few minutes, that should allow it move freely, then turn it out,

    • Hi Akersten, put some hot water in a clean sink to a level that is lower then the height of your bowl, then sit the bowl in for a short amount of time to melt a tiny layer on the outside of the jelly making it easy to tip out.

    • Hi Akersten, Usually if you use a glass mold you need wipe or lightly coat the surface of the mold with a non-stick spray. Then gently tilting the bowl so gravity is working with you, use a knife to ease the edge of the jelly away from the mold to break the seal. Do this all the way around the top of the mold. Place a serving dish upside down on top of the bowl and flip the mold and dish over. Then gently lift off the bowl. If you are finding the jelly is still sticking, some times heating the outer surface of the bowl can help with separation.

  10. Hi!
Can i change the jello with agar or the other of jelly?
So wonderful,Ann! Love your idea! ^^
    Sorry about my english -_-

    • Hi Nay, agar would work for the clear part but it sets at room temperature (gelatin sets at a lower temp) so the needle part may be a challenge as I think it might set in the tip of the needle as it cools down.

  11. Hi Ann! 🙂
Wow! That’s so cool thing! i thought the spider is real #LOL >.<
what is the gelatin that you used to?
Thanks Ann, love your recipe always!

    • hi ryo, the brand I have here is McKenzies

  12. Amazing!

  13. Where do u get ur food color?

  14. I have watched you make these amazing spiders & flowers several times in the last 24 hours. I decided to have a go myself, the ingredients I already have, so went to eBay to order syringes & needles. I have spent hours browsing through eBay, the syringes are readily available, but not the needles. I wondered if it was possible for you to put the shop/seller name on the website to enable viewers like myself to purchase the products we need.
    Thank you

  15. Hello!
I love this recipe sooo much! I can’t wait to make them!!
I was just wondering, could you use packet jelly instead of making your own jelly?
Thank you soooo much for sharing this recipe, they look so amazing!!

    • Hi Fia, if the jelly is not clear you won’t be able to see the designs, one of the jelly brands here sell ‘create’ a jelly’ which is clear but it is an expensive way to buy gelatin.

      • Thank you!

  16. Thanks for your ideas!!!!

  17. OMG Ann! These jello desserts are just out of this world! You are just full of ideas that wow us every time! I know exactly why the flower ones don’t impress your boys since i have 2 boys myself! I love Hello kitty and flowers, so every time i scream with joy when seeing anything made with hello kitty or flowers, my boys just grunt. lols~~ Now they are older , 15 and 19. They would just smile. haha
I definitely will try making the flower jello once i get my hands on some dome molds and syringes. ^^ Thanks so much for making me smile this morning! I will post pictures if i succeed 🙂

    • lol Andria, nice to hear someone else is in a household of boys!

  18. Thanks for the recipe. I will definitely do these on Halloween.
