3D jelly spiders and flowers dessert jello recipe

IMG_6028

Arachnophobia or fear of spiders affects nearly one third of the population, add to that the fear of needles and this is one scary post.  These flowers and spiders are made by injecting a milk based gelatin mixture into a clear jelly.

Gelatine flowers have their origins in Mexico where they are called gelatina floral.  The spiders originated in my kitchen after my boys were not impressed with ‘pretty’ jellies.  Watch the video below for directions on how to make these amazing edible 3D creations.

Equipment that I used:
Needle: hypodermic nipro flomax 19G X 38MM
Syringe: 10mL (0.34 fluid ounces) luer lock latex free  (if you buy more than one you will not have to wash it out every time you want a different colour, I purchased these and the needles on ebay)
Plastic and metal spoons and flat firm plastic cut to a petal shape
Optional a small toy spider or a carrot carved into shape

Clear jello recipe

1 Litre or 4 cups water
300g (10.58 ounces) or 1 1/3 cup plus 2 tsp sugar
1/4 tsp citric acid (or other clear flavoring)
56g (1.98 ounces) or 4 Tbsp powdered gelatine
additional 1 cup or 250ml cold water

Mix together the gelatine and 1 cup of cold water and leave to absorb the water.

Place the 1L (0.26 gallons) water, sugar and citric acid into a saucepan and heat until sugar is dissolved.

Stir through the gelatine until it dissolves and then pour into container and leave in the fridge to set.

Milk based Jello recipe for the pattern

20g (0.71 ounces) or 2 tablespoons gelatine
125millilitres (4.23 fluid ounces) or 1/2 cup water
395g (13.93 ounces) tin sweetened condensed milk
Full cream milk add to the sweetened condensed milk to make a total of 500millilitres (16.91 fluid ounces) or 2 cups liquid.
Food colours (pink, blue, yellow) & cocoa powder or dark chocolate to make brown

Mix together the gelatine and cold water and leave to swell.

Heat the sweetened condensed milk and milk in a saucepan until it just starts to boil.  Remove from heat and stir through the gelatine until it is melted.  Split into smaller bowls to colour.  If the mixture sets before you’re ready to use it – remelt in the microwave or on the stovetop.

  1. Hi Ann,
I think you are just amazing! I live in the middle east and enjoy your creativity, you are very talented!
I was wandering if you got any idea of how to substitute the milk in the colored gelatin, would cream of coconut do it? ( I need it to be non- dairy) .
Thank you so much! continue your great job!

    • Hi Sari, Ann suggests trying coconut milk instead of the dairy milk.

      • Thank you for getting back so fast with the answer. let me be sure I understand correct your reply, I need to use coconut milk instead of the milk + condensed milk? the same quantity? or the coconut milk replaces the milk only? and if so, what can I use instead of the condensed milk?

        • Hi Sari, The coconut milk replaces the milk only. To replace the sweetened condensed milk you could use sweetened condensed coconut milk.

  2. Greetings from Greece! It’s an amazing recipe! I ‘ve tried to make flowers jelly and the results were trully fantastic! Everybody asked me how I did it, so I tried to make some more difficult presentations, like a flying bird or a girl on a bicylce, like a painting made of jello! Thank you so much for the tutorial and the idea. I follow your posts which are very ispiring!

    • They sound amazing. Can you post some photos of your work??

  4. Dear Ann I wanted to make this for my mom for mothers day cause her favorite flower is a Sun flower and i was wondering cause the instructions got me confused how much sugar do I use ? And what aisle can I find the milk at? Please text back I’m 12 years old and I want to do something nice this mother’s day so text back please thanks

    • Hi Marilyn, I hope you made your mum something lovely for Mother’s Day. We can’t tell you where to find the ingredients in your supermarket. As you are 12, it might be good to start with something less complex. Have you tried this recipe? https://www.howtocookthat.net/public_html/sponge-cake-recipe/

  5. Hey Ann! I’m making this for my mom on Mother’s Day and I was wondering what aisle you found sweetened condensed milk in. I’m guessing it is in the freezer aisle? It’s a bit of a strange question, but I don’t want to spend my day looking up and down aisles.

    • Hi Lynsie, We can’t answer that for you, as no two supermarkets are the same. In our local supermarket it you would find it located near the UHT milk and baking supplies.

  6. hello i love the idea but i cant seem to find the cases on ebay could you help me please?

    • Hi Jelly, I just did a quick search on ebay and found some suppliers easily. Search for plastic single cupcake (or muffin) case.

  7. Hello! Here in where I live, there are already gelatin powders with colors. Can I use it instead of using the food coloring since it is much cheaper? Thank you!

  8. Hi Ann, I had a question about the gelatin. After i added the gelatin and water mix to the boiling water, the water turned to a foggy yellow color and does not seem to be setting. Would you be able to tell me what went wrong? Thank you

    • Hi Amy, That seems very odd. Can we suggest you try two things. Firstly check the instructions for the brand of gelatin you are using as the quantities the product recommends may differ from the one we used. Secondly pop the mixture into the fridge for setting and see if that helps.

  10. I am a huge fan! I live in Trinidad CA and I’ve watched all of your videos! FYI I’m only 11years old. This one is one of my favorite recipes. I just made a flower but instead of the milk mixture I used jello a JELLO packet and instead of a needle I made the slits and kept pouring the jello on top and kept on doing that until the slits were full. -SJ

  12. Hi I was wondering where you got the needle from I live in the uk so could you help me find them

  13. Hi ann, I’ve seen loads of your videos and think that they are so inspiring, I wanted to try making these jello flowers but I need a syringe+ needle. I was wondering if it is safe to buy them off ebay, as my dad doesn’t think it’s a good idea.

  14. Hi Ann, This is my first time on pinterest and I just love your ideas. Thank you

  15. Hi Ann, in my country, Romania, i can’t find this “395g (13.93 ounces) Sweetened condensed milk tin” … What is this milk?
I searched in pharmacies and in supermarkets and there not exist
Is a milk powder for baby?
can i use only the normal milk?
I love you … for what you teach us

  16. hi Ann
I was wondering how you get the jelly out of the container the ones that i make keep on falling out in pieces. By the way I LOVE your videos so much and looking forward you your response.

    • Hi Jenny, fill your sink with hot water and place the container in the hot water – making sure it done’t go onto the jelly just the outside of the container. And it will melt a very fine layer of jelly allowing them to slip out easily.

  17. hi Ann I am just letting you know that I called my local pharmacy and they sold me some needles really cheap with the twist off just like the video so maybe in the U.S. people can do that too, they where not the exact size but really close since I dont know about such things I just told him what it was for and he was very helpfull I payed 56 cents each

  18. Hi Ann when i put the milk jelly on top of the clear as a base it doesnt join, so when i take it out the milk layer separates off of it, am i doing something wrong :/

  19. HI Ann
could you show is how to make those gecko/lizard jellies that are in the picture?

  20. hi Ann I really love all of your projects ,but I was wondering where you got your cupcake containers? I can’t seem to find the round topped ones like you have in the video. Do you know where I could get them I’ve already checked ebay?

    • sorry tasha i don’t have a link but i got them from ebay, domed cupcake lids

      • Hey Ann..Im so impressed with your rare skills, you are so inspiring and talented..Thankyou so much for teaching us, keen learners so many things 🙂
However, I have a question here. The quantities you have mentioned here, how many jelly cups can we make out of these? Is it for one cup or more? Please specify this ASAP as i cant wait to try it! Thank you 🙂

        • Hi Adeebah,
It makes 1L of clear jelly, how many containers that fills will depend on the size of your containers.

        • Out of 1 ltr. my sister-in-law prepared about 10 dome cups .
