Since making the high heel cake tutorial requests have been coming in thick and fast for a converse shoe cake. You can make this chuck Taylor All Star sneaker in any colour that your recipient wishes. Or if you’re brave why not try making a patterned one.

Did you know Nike owns converse? They bought out the rights to the brand in 2003 when converse filed for bankruptcy. The Chuck Taylor All Star shoe is very similar now to when it was first designed nearly 90 years ago.

To make the converse shoe cake you will need:

1 1/2 quantities of the chocolate cake recipe baked in two trays (my trays are 38cm (14.96 inches) x 25cm (9.84 inches))
2 x quantities of chocolate buttercream recipe

300g (10.58 ounces) white fondant
600g (21.16 ounces) black fondant
white food colour for stitching
a small paint brush
fondant extruder (optional)
stitching wheel
30g (1.06 ounces) blue fondant
100g (3.53 ounces) cream fondant
red and blue gel food colour for logo
circle cutter
250g (8.82 ounces) brown fondant for cake board (optional)

    Are the pans you baked the cakes in for this converse cake actual cake pans or are they cookie sheets?
    I can’t seem to find any “cake pans” in the size you baked your’s in.

    • Hi Felicity, Trays in that size are usually sold as 15 x 10 inch baking tray (not cookie sheet) and would be a pretty standard size in most countries. If you can’t get that, then use whatever is close in size that will work with your template.

      • Hi! I just purchased this template and will make the cake tonight. However, I think I need a little smaller. It will need to sit on top of a 10in round cake. How can I make the template smaller without distorting the actual size/lengths.

        • Hi Crystal, Just reduce the size of the template when printing. Instead of printing at 100% try printing it at 90% and see if that is the right size for you.

  14. Hello Ann,
    My aunt and i want to make version of your Lava Cake, But the problem is that me and my Aunt cant have gluten, or we would get really sick. Do you have any suggestions to make a gluten free Lava Cake because we cannot find at any of our local stores gluten free chocolate cake mix.
    I would really appreciate your help, because me and My Aunt can rarely ever have any sweets unless we go out of town. Thanks

    • Hi Sadi, Ann doesn’t have a gluten free recipe for this but the ganache recipe and chocolate disc recipe should be gluten free as long as real chocolate is used. Substitute your favourite gluten free cake for the brownie base and you should have the lava cake you are after.

    For my birthday, I was going to make this shoe, but turn it into a figure skate. Do you have any idea to modify the shoe and add a blade?

    • Hi David, What an awesome idea! Ann doesn’t have a match for your request at the moment. You could start by modifying Ann’s converse shoe cake. You will find it difficult to add a blade at the base of an upright cake, as the cake would need more support to hold it’s shape. You would find it easier to make a cake that ‘looked’ like a shoe laying on its side and perhaps make the blade out sugar as per the Frozen Elsa cake (cape): https://www.howtocookthat.net/public_html/frozen-elsa-cake/.

    I’m making the “Converse cake” following your video tutorial,but it’s not clear to me if I’ve to do, for the template purchased, 1 quantities + half of your : “chocolate cake recipe” and 2 quantities of your “chocolate buttercream recipe”?

    • Yes Veronica, You have it right. 1 and a half quantities of the Chocolate Cake recipe and 2 quantities of the chocolate buttercream recipe.

    • Hi Evelyn, This would be difficult to estimate as the cost of ingredients vary a lot from country to country. Ann suggests costing the ingredients in your area. Estimate the time it will take you to make it. It always takes longer than you think. Multiply the number of hours by the hourly rate you want to charge for your time. Add the cost of ingredients and the cost for your time together . You need to roughly estimate your electricity/gas cost as well and add that in. That will give you an idea as to what the base cost to you is to make the item.
