Converse Shoe Cake Tutorial

Since making the high heel cake tutorial requests have been coming in thick and fast for a converse shoe cake. You can make this chuck Taylor All Star sneaker in any colour that your recipient wishes. Or if you’re brave why not try making a patterned one.

Did you know Nike owns converse? They bought out the rights to the brand in 2003 when converse filed for bankruptcy. The Chuck Taylor All Star shoe is very similar now to when it was first designed nearly 90 years ago.

To make the converse shoe cake you will need:

1 1/2 quantities of the chocolate cake recipe baked in two trays (my trays are 38cm (14.96 inches) x 25cm (9.84 inches))
2 x quantities of chocolate buttercream recipe

  4. My 10-year-old niece requested a sneaker cake, but I told her that was too difficult. Then I found your website. This was my first time sculpting a cake, and my first time using fondant. It’s not perfect, but your instructions made this possible! Thank you so much! This will be a wonderful surprise for my niece tomorrow.

    • Hey Nicole, this is a brilliant result and amazing for a first go with fondant.

  5. hi! i made this cake after watching you tutorial

    • Hi Yara, What a great job. Your laces look particularly real. Well done!

  6. Hi Ann, can you send me the sketch for the shoe please ?

  7. Do you think I could make the laces with a tagliatelle attachment on my pasta machine? Making it on Friday 🙂

    • Hi Ben, Ann thinks this would be worth having a go. Do post a photo of the finished cake!

      • Hi Ann. Im Ben and I’m 14 years old. I love baking, and made this cake a couple of weeks ago. I entered it into an adult competition, and won a hundred pounds! Thank You for sharing all of your amazing bakes.

        • Hi Ben, That is fabulous. The cake looks awesome. Enjoy your prize!

  8. Hi Ann,
Are the pans you baked the cakes in for this converse cake actual cake pans or are they cookie sheets?
I can’t seem to find any “cake pans” in the size you baked your’s in.
    Thanks!!

    • Hi Felicity, Trays in that size are usually sold as 15 x 10 inch baking tray (not cookie sheet) and would be a pretty standard size in most countries. If you can’t get that, then use whatever is close in size that will work with your template.

  9. Hi Ann, just wondering if I could use choc ganache (that’s firmed up to be the same consistency as buttercream) instead of buttercream?
    Thanks

    • Hi Felicity, Yes you can.

  10. hello Ann

  13. Hi, how can I get the link to the Converse Sneaker template? i am unable to access. Thank you.

    • Hi Iliana, Try the shop page for the templates if the link is giving you problems: https://www.howtocookthat.net/public_html/chocolate-cake-recipe/

      • Hi! I just purchased this template and will make the cake tonight. However, I think I need a little smaller. It will need to sit on top of a 10in round cake. How can I make the template smaller without distorting the actual size/lengths.

        • Hi Crystal, Just reduce the size of the template when printing. Instead of printing at 100% try printing it at 90% and see if that is the right size for you.

  14. Hello Ann,
My aunt and i want to make version of your Lava Cake, But the problem is that me and my Aunt cant have gluten, or we would get really sick. Do you have any suggestions to make a gluten free Lava Cake because we cannot find at any of our local stores gluten free chocolate cake mix.
I would really appreciate your help, because me and My Aunt can rarely ever have any sweets unless we go out of town. Thanks
    ~Sadi:)

    • Hi Sadi, Ann doesn’t have a gluten free recipe for this but the ganache recipe and chocolate disc recipe should be gluten free as long as real chocolate is used. Substitute your favourite gluten free cake for the brownie base and you should have the lava cake you are after.

  15. Here’s the Converse shoe in my granddaughter’s favourite colour. I followed your great video tutorial but also referred to an actual shoe for more detail.

    • Oh my gosh Rae, that looks amazing! I am so impressed. Well done!

  16. Dear Ann,
For my birthday, I was going to make this shoe, but turn it into a figure skate. Do you have any idea to modify the shoe and add a blade?

    • Hi David, What an awesome idea! Ann doesn’t have a match for your request at the moment. You could start by modifying Ann’s converse shoe cake. You will find it difficult to add a blade at the base of an upright cake, as the cake would need more support to hold it’s shape. You would find it easier to make a cake that ‘looked’ like a shoe laying on its side and perhaps make the blade out sugar as per the Frozen Elsa cake (cape): https://www.howtocookthat.net/public_html/frozen-elsa-cake/.

      • Ok ,
Thank you so much! I was wondering though if I should make it upright , and then flip it over, or make it already on its side. Do you have a preference?

  17. I enjoyed trying out this cake for my nieces birthday. It’s not as good as yours but a fun little cake!

    • Hi Holly, Thanks for posting. Your cake looks amazing. I hope your niece loved it!

    • hi holly, congrats!! what did you use for the board? its great!

      • Hi Jennifer, Ann used a regular round cake board and decorated it with fondant. You can see this on the video.

  18. Hi Ann,

I need of your answer as soon as possible.
I’m making the “Converse cake” following your video tutorial, but it’s not clear to me if I’ve to do, for the template purchased, 1 quantities + half of your : “chocolate cake recipe” and 2 quantities of your “chocolate buttercream recipe”?
Please answer soon because I have to get started right away!

    • Yes Veronica, You have it right. 1 and a half quantities of the Chocolate Cake recipe and 2 quantities of the chocolate buttercream recipe.

  19. Why do we have to pay for the template? What if you can’t buy it?

  20. Hi Ann
Just been asked to make a trainer cake and wondering how much to charge. Would you be able to give me a guide to how much a cake like this would cost please?
Thank you. Great video as always!
    Evelyn

    • Hi Evelyn, This would be difficult to estimate as the cost of ingredients vary a lot from country to country. Ann suggests costing the ingredients in your area. Estimate the time it will take you to make it. It always takes longer than you think. Multiply the number of hours by the hourly rate you want to charge for your time. Add the cost of ingredients and the cost for your time together . You need to roughly estimate your electricity/gas cost as well and add that in. That will give you an idea as to what the base cost to you is to make the item.
