Converse Shoe Cake Tutorial

converse shoe cake ann reardon

Since making the high heel cake tutorial requests have been coming in thick and fast for a converse shoe cake. You can make this chuck Taylor All Star sneaker in any colour that your recipient wishes. Or if you’re brave why not try making a patterned one.

Did you know Nike owns converse? They bought out the rights to the brand in 2003 when converse filed for bankruptcy. The Chuck Taylor All Star shoe is very similar now to when it was first designed nearly 90 years ago.

To make the converse shoe cake you will need:

1 1/2 quantities of the chocolate cake recipe baked in two trays (my trays are 38cm (14.96 inches) x 25cm (9.84 inches))
2 x quantities of chocolate buttercream recipe

Thanks for this fab tutorial. When my daughter requested a converse shoe cake for her birthday I didn’t know where to start. I followed the instructions step by step and it looked amazing. She loved it and everyone was impressed. The only thing I changed was the sugar content of the cake. I used less than half and it was still totally sweet enough. Thank you so much!!!

Great cake tutorial! I made this for my son a couple of years ago for his graduation and will try to use the same templates to make an ice hockey skate for my youngest son.

    Hi,
I’m making this in 4 days. I noticed that you don’t list how many grams/ounces of the cream Fondant you need like the other colors. Do you know roughly how much I need for this color? Also what thickness did you roll these out to? Thank you so much for the template!

    • Hi Holly, It is roughly 100g of cream fondant, the cream is rolled quite thin as it is sitting on top of the black, about 1mm.?

      • Hi Ann,

How long are you supposed to leave it in the fridge for?

        thank you 🙂

        • Hi Jason, a couple of hours is fine but you can leave it overnight if you need to. The buttercream frosting seals in the moistness of the cake.

  10. Hi Ann
We have just purchased the template and are very excited about getting started. A couple of quick questions please:
    1) should we use fondant or can we use modelling chocolate (I seem to have more success with the modelling chocolate as my fondant always seems to dry out, I usually make the cake at least one day before)? Is there anything to be aware of if we do use modelling chocolate?
    2) we are making it for my daughters 18th, and need to serve more than 15, so my daughter suggested putting it on a shoe box – do you have any tips on creating or structuring the shoe box as I am worried that it won’t hold the weight of the shoe?
    3) a general question that I have always wondered – how far in advance can we make the cake, that is, without the buttercream and/or ganache being out of the fridge and not making people unwell? My understanding is that once the fondant is on it can go in the fridge or freezer.
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and your amazing cakes

    • Hi Nat, That is a lot of questions. Ann made her cake with fondant, but use whatever you feel most confidnet with. The main challenge that comes to mind is thinking through how you will get the colours and shapes you need. I thing the laces will definitely work best out of fondant. If you want to put the ‘shoe’ on a ‘box’ , then you will definitely need to add supports. Have a look at these tutorials to devise a plan (https://www.howtocookthat.net/public_html/teddy-bear-cake/ https://www.howtocookthat.net/public_html/secret-life-pets-dog-cake/ ) You will need around 3 supports under a cake board shaped to match the base of your shoe, to support the weight. If it sounds too difficult then you could make a ‘pair of shoes'(rather than one) or a bunch of matching cupcakes or cake pops. Lastly cake is always best fresh. Ann would make and decorate the cake the day prior to serving. As long as it is kept in a cool place it should be fine. You could refrigerate the cake once it is totally covered in buttercream but fondant often doesn’t cope well in the fridge or freezer. The moisture causes it to soften and sag. So keep your buttercream covered cake in the fridge overnight and then let it slowly come to room temperature on the bench before decorating with fondant or the moisture/condensation will ruin your fonant or chocolate. If you use modelling chocolate then the fridge should be fine as long as it doesn’t get too cool.

      • Thank you so much for your response, that is really helpful. Have a lovely day. Nat

    • Hi Ann
Thank you so much for your amazing template, it took all the guesswork out of making a cake, and saved heaps of time and heaps of wastage – and most importantly my daughter and her friends all loved it (i am sure they will improve with practice)
(I did cheat a little as I started making it at midnight, so I just printed the logo and stuck it directly onto a fondant disc)
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and answering my earlier questions – you made it so easy from now on cake choices will be limited to those I can buy one of your templates for!

      • Wow it turned out great Nat. Well done! Hope your daughter loved it.

  11. Where are the templates for covering the converse shoe cake

    • Hi Seng, You can purchase templates using the Buy it Now button or via the shop page.

  12. template much better if you print onto A3 – comes out proper size (I hadn’t realised it was not to scale until I read Stephanie’s comment and the response lol). I’m using the template to make a roller skate – my first 3D cake! Thank you for the template xx

    • thanks for the feedback Julie, it looks like when it exported as a pdf file it had changed it from landscape to portrait page (effectively shrinking it to make it fit sideways in the centre of the page). It has now been fixed to be portrait so it is the size as shown in the video. For future readers the sole of the shoe should be 26.5cm, if it is printing smaller please check that your printer is not set to ‘scale to fit’, you should print at 100%.

  13. Where can I Order the fondant for this cake, and all the other ingredients. If you can supply all I need what is the total cost, including post & packaging.

    • Hi Georgina, Ann doesn’t provide ingredients. You can easily source the ingredients and fondant through your local baking store. Ann does provide the template which can be purchased via the Buy it now button above.

  14. Hi Ann,
I would love the bake this cake. How long does it approximately take you to bake this cake?

    • Hi Nadine, It will depend on the size of the trays you bake it in and the depth of your batter. Ann recommends checking at about the 20 minute mark onwards to see if the cake is done.

  15. Can u plz post the shoe template

    • hi ridhima, all my templates are delivered digitally so that you can print out the templates at home. Sometimes gmail and hotmail accounts have trouble with deliveries so if there’s any problem you can get in touch again & we will sort it out quickly.

  16. Hi Ann, I made this cake a couple of years ago and I can’t find the template on my computer. I was hoping I could log in somewhere and print it out. Do I need to re-purchase it again.

    Thank you,

    Scott

  17. Hola.. Necesito los moldes de la plantilla de la zapatilla..muchas gracias!!! Es fabulosa toda la información ..gracias x la ayuda..

  18. Would marshmallow fondant work for this cake or would you recommend regular fondant?

    • IHi Tr, I haven’t tried marshmallow fondant but it could work. The level of detail means it helps to have a great fondant that is easy to work with.

  19. What Template? ?

  20. Amazing tutorial!! No one could believe this was a cake when I was done! Thank you!

    • Another view

    • Wow great work Amber. You did a tremendous job.
