Debunking More Viral Cooking Videos

Trustworthy is defined in the dictionary as reliable, dependable, tried and true. Unfortunately a lot of the viral videos tested in this series have been tried and found wanting.

Does the publishing of disinformation (deliberate spread of information that you know is false for your own gain) really matter in how-to and cooking videos? I believe it does. Cooking is science and it should be portrayed accurately. In the same way as people would get concerned about inaccurate history videos, dodgy maths content and fake news. Fake science is miseducating the viewer and wasting their time and money if they try it out.

Combine all the ingredients and knead to from a smooth dough. Use a rolling pin or pasta machine to roll out really thinly. Cut into fine noodles.
Cook in boiling water until tender. Place in bowls, top with finely sliced roast pork, a soft boiled egg, shiitake mushrooms and some bean sprouts. Pour over boiling hot stock in the flavour of your choice.

Skittles Popcorn Recipe

skittle popcorn recipe ann reardon
60g (2.12 ounces) butter
1/8th cup corn syrup or glucose syrup
1/2 cup one colour of skittles
3 cups freshly popped plain popcorn

Combine the butter, corn syrup and skittles in a pan and stir over high heat until melted. Add the popcorn and stir through. Spread out onto a lined baking tray and bake in the oven for 10 minutes. Leave to cool the store in an airtight container.

Note: I found this recipe to be greasy and if baking again I would experiment with removing the butter and adding a few tablespoons of water instead. However everyone in my house prefers eating skittles and popcorn separately so I did not try this out.

The dough was too tough to roll out. Did I miss a step, or is there something I did wrong? How do I fix it. I did cook it. We just had really thick noodles. It did taste amazing! 💕

Hi Ann! I just want to first say I really love your videos, I watch all of your debunking videos and I love them so much! I wanted to point out something about the strawberry part of the video – I think there is some important information missing, please look up “Spotted Wing Drosophila.” This is the species of invasive fly that lays its eggs inside perfectly ripe, not rotted soft fruits like strawberries and what was showing in most of those viral tik tok videos. (They are not present in all strawberries, which is probably why yours were ok.)

So, the strawberry can look perfectly fine on the outside, and there can be SWD larvae living inside. The salt water is crucial to the test because it draws them out since they are at risk of dehydration. Farmers and wholesale fruit buyers actually use the salt water test to see if the SWD are present, since the presence of these pests represent huge financial losses for farmers each year.

I tried to leave a comment of your youtube video about this but it isn’t showing up for some reason. I’m sure this isn’t a big deal to most people, since I agree with you that strawberries are healthy and it’s natural for some bugs to be present. But, I just thought you would want to know since I know from watching your videos you try very hard to present a complete and honest picture when you are debunking things. I hope this information is helpful, thank you 🙂

    Hi Ann,
their noodle recipe actually looks like a horribly failed attempt at making spaetzle, a german kind of noodles. Your result looks like spaetzle will when the dough was way too wet. We push the dough through holes, but with the dryer dough, you need some force behind it, so the plastic holes would probably rip.
At home we use a metal spaetzle press for making them, those look like oversized garlic presses, but you can also just push the dough through the holes of a steamer with a scraper.

    HI Ann,
I opened my email and saw the pic of the “skittles popcorn” and knew there is no way that will work as i’ve tried to make coloured pocorn once. What i did was disolve some oil based food colour in the oil and popped. It worked, sort off, I had small flecks of colour and the rest wasn’t a pure white…
