Dora The Explorer Cake

Dora cake decorating lesson by how to cook that

Here’s a super simple Dora the Explorer birthday cake idea.  Bright and beautifully colourful in the Dora logo colours, this dress is ready for any party or fiesta.  Making a gorgeous cake is fun but there’s always a big clean-up afterwards of course. The only issue is that our dishwasher broke this week, meaning all of Dora’s dishes plus the usual two or three loads per day suddenly piled up.  It was all a bit of a hassle … but then something interesting happened.  This week I discovered that doing dishes together is a great time to talk to your kids.  It’s like holding them captive with soapy water and a tea-towel and surprisingly effective at extending dinner conversations into the evening.  It’s funny how life’s little problems sometimes throw up unexpected pleasures.

To make your Dora Cake you will need

Cake:
I used a double quantity of my light fluffy sponge cake recipe. Baked into two 20cm (7.87 inches) round cake tins and one 20cm (7.87 inches) pyrex oven proof bowl.

Frosting:
One quantity of white chocolate ganache cooled and whipped with one quantity of vanilla buttercream. See the frosting recipes post for those recipes.

Fondant:
60g (2.12 ounces) pink
60g (2.12 ounces) purple
60g (2.12 ounces) orange
60g (2.12 ounces) yellow
60g (2.12 ounces) green
60g (2.12 ounces) blue
If you are colouring white fondant you will need red, blue and yellow gel colour to make these and I suggest you also buy purple colouring as it can be hard to mix a bright purple, it tends to look greyish.

    • Hi Mehnaze, It sounds like your oven was running a bit hot. You could adjust the temperature down a bit. It might be worth getting an oven thermometer so you can check the temperature of the oven.

  6. Thank you so much I understand now my Pyrex is bigger

  7. Here it is

    • Lovely cake Netty well done 😀

  8. Thank you for the tutorial very easy to follow. One thing I am not sure about. I used the same cake tins and one Pyrex ball as you did and made two quantity of the sponge cake as well. I made it in two batches not at once. So the first batch went into two baking tins as in half half and one whole quantity went in to the Pyrex ball. When they were ready to cut in half etc I realised that the Pyrex ball cake s diameter is bigger than my cake tins cakes although I am using the same ones you do. So when I cut my Pyrex into 3 layers I couldn’t use one layer which was too big. It still turned out good and tall as I used the two tins of cake on the bottom. Can you pls tell me the size of you cake tins and the Pyrex ball may be my Pyrex is too big or the tins are too small for the Pyrex. Also do you grease the Pyrex? I didn’t grease the tins as you said but wondering about the Pyrex. Also When I took the cakes out they were tall but as soon as they were out they went down but still good I just want to get it right and turned the tins upside down to cool and they fall out but nicely luckily .. Lol thank you for helping me you are amazing and I love your videos ideas cakes frosting sand the simplicity of your methods there are many out there but I think you are different and very smart

    • Hi Netty, yes I greased the pyrex bowl, my tins are 20cm in diameter the same as the top of my bowl. If your bowl is bigger you could always carve it to make it smaller 😀

  9. Hi Ann,

Love your tutorials.. Just wondering with ur sponge cake receipe, can it be decorated with fondant?

    Thanks so much!!

    • Hi Tiff, yes if it is a small cake, I wouldn’t use it for a larger cake you’d really need something firmer

  10. Hi Ann, my gorgeous two year old granddaughter Gracie, told me that she wanted a Dora cake for her third birthday. Fantastic! I can now make her one following your instructions, thanks so much.
