Easy 2 Ingredient Chocolate Mousse Recipe

easy chocolate mousse recipe

The easiest chocolate mousse you’ll ever make. All you need is chocolate and water! Perfect when you need a dessert a hurry. Get started with the first step, throw it in the freezer and make your mains. Then whip this up and serve. Done!

Dark Chocolate Mousse Recipe

180g (6.35 ounces) dark chocolate
60mL (2.03 fluid ounces) or 1/4 cup water
Extra 70mL (2.37 fluid ounces) or 2 1/2 tablespoons cold water from the fridge

Milk Chocolate Mousse

180g (6.35 ounces) milk chocolate
60mL (2.03 fluid ounces) or 1/4 cup water
Extra 60mL (2.03 fluid ounces) or 1/4 cup cold water from the fridge

White Chocolate Mousse

180g (6.35 ounces) white chocolate
60mL (2.03 fluid ounces) or 1/4 cup water
Extra 40mL (1.35 fluid ounces) or 3 Tblsp cold water from the fridge

Place the chocolate of your choice and the 60ml of water into a bowl. Microwave on high heat on full power for 30 seconds, stir well. Heat for another 20 seconds and stir again. The mixture should be smooth with all the chocolate melted. If you still have unmelted chocolate give it 10 seconds more in the microwave.
Put the mixture into a plastic bag, seal at the top and flatten. Place in the freezer for 1 hour. Flattening it in the bag increases the surface area so it cools down more quickly than it would in the bowl.
Whip the chilled chocolate mixture on high speed using electric mixers until smooth and paler. Add a little of the cold water at a time.

Pour or pipe into glasses.  Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes and serve. Super easy!

  1. Hello! Just wondering if you can whisk it with a spoon or something because I do not have an electric mixer. Thanks!

    • Hi Kageyama, You could whisk it with a whisk or hand held beaters but it would take a lot longer and the results would not be as good. An electric beater would get lots of air into the mix before it sets.

  2. About how many grams/cups will this make?

  3. Can you freeze this on a tray, then cut it into circles?

Hi Ann!!! I love your videos
I made this recipe for my mom and it was absolutely scrumptious! She loved it! And it was super easy to make, and that’s coming from a kid *under 13 years old* thanks Ann!

  5. Hi Ann! What brand of chocolate do you use? Id like to buy the same kind you use in all your chocolate videos.

    • Hi Jessy, Ann uses a variety of brands available through the local supermarket.

Hello Ann! I’d like to try this mousse but would it be okay if I placed it in between layers of cake to make a chocolate mousse cake. Thank you!

    • Hi Suhaylah. It sounds like a yummy idea for a dessert but wouldn’t really work as a cake. You would need to put it in a serving container. Just be aware that the weight of the cake layers may flatten the texture of the mousse and it definitely won’t stand up like a filled layer cake.. Let each layer set well before adding your cake layer or put cake on the bottom.

How does this mousse compare if you substitute cream instead of water?

    • Hi Daisy, you can replace water with cream but the result is a chocolate ganache not a mousse .

Hi Ann i was wondering how many does this chocolate mousse serves? I used this as my inspiration for my Afternoon Teas projects at school and I thought it was wonderful to make. You an inspiration Ann keep inspiring people.

    • Hi Chloe, If you make all the layers you will should get around 4 small serves. Test the recipes prior to using it for your project, as different brands of chocolate respond in different ways. Practice will help you to get the consistency just right.

Hi Anne, love your videos, great inspiration and learning new techniques for us home cooks ….thank you. I
can this chocolate mousse be flavoured with some brandy and orange zest?

    • Hi Chris, the orange zest should be fine. The brandy may effect the mousse as the balance of fat to water might be altered by the alcohol. You would need to experiment as this is something Ann hasn’t yet tested.

      • Hey Ann!
Just wondering, what do we do if we have no microwave?
Do you just heat it up on the hob?

Hi Ann! I’m making this right now, but I didn’t watch the video, I just followed the recipe here. In the video just say that you use hot water, but it doesn’t say it here so I already mixed it with lukewarm water. Do you think it matters? Thank you!

Hi, I was just wondering if the 180g of chocolate was for one layer or for one serve, thanks.

    -MCWOW

    • Hi MCWOW, the 180g provides one layer for the 4 serves.

Hi Ann, while making this recipe I added the cold water and then the mixture turned runny is there a way I could fix this?

    • You need to add the cold water slowly.

    • Hi Jemma, This usually make about 4 serves using the 3 types of chocolate but it will depend on how big you make your serves.

Thank You Ann ! This is very useful for me , and I would like to ask , if this dessert could finish within an hour ? I love your dessert very much !

    • Hi Angel, because of the chilling and assembly required you will need more than an hour but it is very quick to make.

      • Can I put the chocolate in the freezer for more than one hour ?

        • Hi Angel, It all depends on how cold your freezer is. You want to chill and set the chocolate and not freeze it solid.
