Easy 2 Ingredient Chocolate Mousse Recipe

easy chocolate mousse recipe

The easiest chocolate mousse you’ll ever make. All you need is chocolate and water! Perfect when you need a dessert a hurry. Get started with the first step, throw it in the freezer and make your mains. Then whip this up and serve. Done!

Dark Chocolate Mousse Recipe

180g (6.35 ounces) dark chocolate
60mL (2.03 fluid ounces) or 1/4 cup water
Extra 70mL (2.37 fluid ounces) or 2 1/2 tablespoons cold water from the fridge

Milk Chocolate Mousse

180g (6.35 ounces) milk chocolate
60mL (2.03 fluid ounces) or 1/4 cup water
Extra 60mL (2.03 fluid ounces) or 1/4 cup cold water from the fridge

White Chocolate Mousse

180g (6.35 ounces) white chocolate
60mL (2.03 fluid ounces) or 1/4 cup water
Extra 40mL (1.35 fluid ounces) or 3 Tblsp cold water from the fridge

Place the chocolate of your choice and the 60ml of water into a bowl. Microwave on high heat on full power for 30 seconds, stir well. Heat for another 20 seconds and stir again. The mixture should be smooth with all the chocolate melted. If you still have unmelted chocolate give it 10 seconds more in the microwave.
Put the mixture into a plastic bag, seal at the top and flatten. Place in the freezer for 1 hour. Flattening it in the bag increases the surface area so it cools down more quickly than it would in the bowl.
Whip the chilled chocolate mixture on high speed using electric mixers until smooth and paler. Add a little of the cold water at a time.

Pour or pipe into glasses.  Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes and serve. Super easy!

Great Recipe but can I add milk instead of water?

    • Hi Hanna, No you can’t replace the water with milk.

  2. Hey Ann could you use a hand blender instead of an electric mixer ?

    • Hi Racael, In theory you could but you will get much better results with an electric mizer.

  3. Can I use this mousse in an entremet and pour mirror glaze over it? And can I added color to the white chocolate mousse?

    • Hi Deepa, This is a soft mousse rather than a firm one, so you can use it in other desserts but it may not be suitable for your purposes.

Hi Ann, how long can this stay in the fridge for before serving?
I want to make some for my daughters birthday party. If I make them the day before will they be ok? or does it go hard if it is in the fridge for too long? thanks 🙂

    • Hi Jess, the day prior should be fine.

    • Hi Nadia, Ann doesn’t recommend a particular brand, just a good quality real chocolate.

  6. Hi! If you don’t have a microwave, what can you use to substitute? thanks!

  7. hey ann i was wondering how much this recipe makes according to the measurements thanks

    • Hi Divya, This makes 2 generous serves or 4 small serves.

I love this recipe. Super simple. Would recommend to anyone not wanting to go out buying ingredients as you will have them all. Also would be tricky to get this wrong as it’s so easy. Thanks howtocookthat

  9. Hi, Anne
I adore your YouTube channel and your sweet, inventive innovations! I have a question concerning this mousse recipe; I have 3 milk-chocolate bars (each 99g/3.5 oz), and 3 bars of white, (each 125g/4.4oz). How many cups of water should I use for the white, and then for the milk? I see that the recipe refers to 180g of each, respectively. Would you please help me?

    • You can just use ratio to figure it out

Hi Ann! This dessert looks amazing and is simple to make, so thank you for sharing this recipe with us! I was wondering, could we substitute the water with milk?

    • Hi KayleneP, not in this case.

  14. 2 things:
How are you supposed to whip the chocolate when it states in your video and blog post to lace in freezer for an hour?

Can I use a stand mixer? Or does it have to be hand?

    • Hi Nicole, resting the melted chcolate and water mix in the freezer just cools it down quickly. It won’t set hard. You can then whip it like a thick cream.

Very nice recipe. But I have a question, can we use a normal whisk instead an electric beater to whip it?

    • Hi Karthika, You could but it us unlikely that you willget results anywhere near as good.

  17. Hi Ann … Can I whip the frozen chocolate mixture by hand using a fork instead of an electric mixer ? I don’t have an electric mixer . And if I can use a fork to whip the mixture , for how long should I whip ?

    • Hi Sathya, It isn’t impossible but won’t work well. It needs to be whipped very quickly as it sets to get plenty of air into the mixture. Generally hand beating wont achieve great results but you can certainly try.

  18. Could you take the chocolate from the freezer earlier? Like 20 mins or so?

    • Hi Cheeser. This recipe doesn’t use the freezer. The mousse needs to be chilled in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.

      • I think @cheeser is referring to this part of the recipe:
        > Put the mixture into a plastic bag, seal at the top and flatten. Place in the freezer for 1 hour. Flattening it in the bag increases the surface area so it cools down more quickly than it would in the bowl.

  19. Hii Ann… Do u think I can divide the quantity for two servings instead nd use dairy milk?

    • Hi Farhana, You could just use one type of chocolate if you prefer, but the serving size is small. I would keep the quantities the same and make your serves a little larger.

i loved this desert but i don’t know why the white chocolate didn’t work with me so i had to add wipping cream to it, and it had real coco butter as well.

    • Hi Fatma, What is sold as white chocolate varies a great deal. You could try a different brand next time. What makes the two ingredient recipe work is the ratios of ingredients. Did you have success with the other types of chocolate??

      • Where do you get your chocolate? What is the name of the brand?

        • Hi Reese, Ann uses a variety of real chocolate that comes from the local supermarket. She doesn’t recommend a particular brand but definitely prefers real chocolate.
