Hand Bag Cake Tutorial

Inspired by a $20K lively pink hand bag, this handbag cake is a delicious and affordable alternative for those of us who would never dream of spending that much on an accessory.

I always smile when people comment on YouTube that ‘she must have made it hundreds of times before’.  The video you see is actually me making the cake for the first time. So who taught me to do a zip like that? Well I just looked at a zip on a handbag and try to figure out what else has evenly-spaced thin parts that could make those little indents?  I did some tests on scraps of fondant until I had it down. The aluminum flashing for the pattern is a similar method that I used to make my Twitter and iPad cakes.  You can actually buy patterned texture mats, but they’re expensive and most people will only make a cake like this once, so this is a much cheaper alternative. Hope you enjoy.

To make the cake you will need:

Hand Bag Cake Template with guides for cutting the cake and fondant pieces.
This cake 25cm (9.84 inches) x 19cm (7.48 inches) x 11 cm (4.33 inches) (Length x Height x Width) and will make about 35 serves.

If you want the a bigger cake you will need to enlarge the template and increase the quantities accordingly.

Double the quantity of the chocolate cake recipe baked in two trays 38cm (14.96 inches) x 25cm (9.84 inches) x 2.5cm (0.98 inches)
400g (14.11 ounces) red fondant
1400g (49.38 ounces) white fondant
200g (7.05 ounces) black fondant
To make the lively pink fondant mix the red and white fondant and add a tiny bit of yellow and blue gel colour.
edible gold luster dust
Shine spray (optional)
2 quantities of Chocolate Buttercream frosting mixed with 1 quantity of chocolate ganache

Hi, Im going to attempt this cake… I was wondering if I could make the cake part and assemble the cake shape, and then freeze? So all I have to do closer to the time is the fondant part?

  7. Hi Ann,
I couldn’t find yellow gel food colour as they are currently out of stock at Coles and Woolworths. Can I still get this lively pink colour if I just use a yellow fondant instead? Or is it possible to just use a bit of the usual yellow food colouring? Will appreciate your recommendation a lot.
Thank you for the inspiration and have a wonderful day!

    • Hi Skye, I think it would be difficult to get a yellow fondant recoloured to this pink. It is much easier starting with a red and white fondant. Having said that you can make the bag any colour you like, so don’t feel it has to be this exact colour pink.

  8. Hi Ann, I’m finding it difficult to get to the lively pink fondant Roughly how much do you mean when you say add tiny amount of blue and yellow gel ?

    • Hi Karen, You don’t need much at all as the colouring goes a long way. It is better to add just a little and increase till you get what you are after. Ann often uses a toothpick or something small to dip in the colour and then dab onto the fondant, befor mixing. Of course you could just order the color fondant you are after from a supplier.

  9. Hello,

I keep hitting the buy now button and nothing is happening. I am trying to purchase the cake template. Every time I click the buy now, it just refreshes the page.

    • Hi, i’ve just checked and it’s working fine now. Perhaps it was just a glitch. Can you give another try?

  10. Pls how do i get the printable templates for the various parts of ds cake

    • Hi Kien, the template can be purchased using the Buy It Now Button in the recipe above.

  11. mine came so little. how do I increase it on paper

    • hi Beckie,
make sure that your printer is set to print at 100%. It will then print at the right size over several pieces of paper that you can just stick together. Good luck 🙂

      • it is at 100 % even in the landscape mode it only came out about 8 inches long for the bottom and like4 inches wide..

        • then the side of the bigger part (round part) is 8 inches long and 6 inches tall. is that the right size..??

          • Sounds very close. The actual bag dimensions are listed above. By the time it is iced etc it would about right.

      • Hi Ann
I need this cake for Friday and have just printed out template. Unfortunately I cant get it to print to an accurate size…..only very small outlines. Please advise. Thanks

        • Hi Teresa, If ther is an issue it will be related to your printer settings. Ensure your printer is set to print at ‘full size’ and not to scale or ‘scale’ to fit. Print that will provide accurate sizing. Note that this is not a huge cake and the templates will always seem a little small. The finished cake is the size seen in the video.

  12. Hie, how long will it take for me to receive the template in South Africa after making the payment coz i need to make the cake on friday. Thanks

    • Hi Nicola, the download link comes up immediately on payment. You will also recieve a back up email as well. Check your email filter if you can’t locate it easily.

  13. Hi thanks to howtocookthat, i make this cake with your template for a friend everybody including the birthday gal love it to the max.

    • Awesome work Kris!

    • how big was yours. I cant get my templetes larger..

      • Did you ever resolve this problem? I just purchased the ‘template’ but it is tiny and each section doesnt even fill an A4 page. How did you get it big enough to need to tape pages together?
        Thanks

  14. A close up!

  15. I recently had my 40th birthday party and found a lovely lady, Lyndel form Five Starr Cakes and Toppers to make this cake for me. I originally had the bag as my cake but later changed the design to feed 60 guests. This was the final product, and Lyndel added every detail of the bag! The bag was made out of fondant! So amazingly beautiful! Thank you for the inspiration Ann!

    • The cake with the bag as a topper!
