Marvel Avengers Cake

marvel avengers cake how to cook that

Today we are making a Marvel Avengers cake with Iron Man’s mask, Thor’s hammer, Captain America’s shield, Hawkeye’s bow and arrow and of course Hulk’s massive green fist smashing through the top of the cake. HULK SMASH! This one was for a birthday party held at a public venue and it actually created a bit of a spectacle with lots of people stopping to stare and admire the cake. All part of the fun!

To make this Marvel Avengers Cake you will need:

Serves: I always find the number of serves tricky to estimate as it depends on how big you cut your slices and if there’s lots of other food at the party. Is this your only dessert? If so then you will want reasonable slices. However if the kids have already had lots of sweet food then your portions will be smaller.
To give some indication, the cake and frosting used to make this Marvel cake is enough to make 30 cupcakes, so if you’re cutting smaller sized portions you’ll serve 30. If you want dessert sized portions I’d say 20 people will be happy.

Fondant Cutting Templates:

Cake:
1½ x the quantity of my favorite chocolate cake recipe in the world.
Baked in three round cake tins 20cm (7.87 inches) in diameter and one small bowl or large teacup the one I used was 12 cm (4.72 inches) in diameter at the top and 5cm (1.97 inches) at the base.

Simple Syrup:
1/4 cup or 55g (1.94 ounces) sugar mixed with 1/4 cup or 63g (2.22 ounces) of water. Heat until the sugar has just dissolved. Allow to cool and add some vanilla essence.

Frosting:
200g (7.05 ounces) milk chocolate
70millilitres (2.37 fluid ounces) or 1/4 cup plus 1 teaspoon cream (35% fat)

120g (4.23 ounces) or 1/2 cup plus 1 Tbsp margarine or butter
1 1/3 cups or 165g (5.82 ounces) icing sugar
1/2 cup or 50g (1.76 ounces) cocoa powder

Heat the cream and pour over the chocolate. Leave for a minute and then stir until smooth. If you still have some unmelted chocolate microwave for 10 seconds at a time and stir. Leave to cool at room temperature over night or for an hour in the fridge.
Whip together the margarine and icing sugar until light an fluffy. Add the cocoa powder and mix well to combine. Finally add the ganache and whisk until smooth.

Rice Crispies Recipe:
200g (7.05 ounces) or 6 cups of rice bubbles
200g (7.05 ounces) or 2 1/3 cups of marshmallows

Melt the marshmallows in the microwave then stir though the rice crispies. You may want to do this in two smaller batches rather than one large bowl. It will be very sticky. Rub your hands with a little vegetable oil to allow you to handle the mixture.

Fondant and cake decorating supplies:
150g (5.29 ounces) black fondant
20g (0.71 ounces) white fondant
500g (17.64 ounces) green fondant
300g (10.58 ounces) red fondant
50g (1.76 ounces) brown fondant for the bow and arrow
250g (8.82 ounces) blue fondant for the shield and to cover the board
500g (17.64 ounces) ivory fondant to cover the cake
powdered blue food colouring
gold and silver edible luster dust
optional: cake shine spray to spray on the mask.
A strong round cake board 10inch (25.4 centimetres) diameter

Confectionary:
1 large sized kitkat
1 boost bar or similar for the handle of thors hammer.
100g (3.53 ounces) compound white chocolate

Below is a summary of steps please see the video for detailed instructions.

Remember all these fondant details can be made up to a few weeks ahead and just left to air dry for a few days and then stored in a container to protect from dust.

Hulks Fist
Use rice crispies to make the shape of hulks fist. Then add a cake pop stick into the middle of the fist and stand it in a tissue box or similar to hold it upright. Add a strip of fondant along each finger. Then add snakes of fondant for tendons down the back of the hand. Cover the fist in green fondant. Draw in the details on the fist using a knife. Brush with blue powdered food colour to add shading.

Iron Mans Mask
Make the ironmans mask out of rice crispies in the size shown on the template. Then take the side profile template and add/build it up where needed.
Cover the mask in two layers of red fondant. Use the flat part of a knife to make the straight line across where the eyes and mouth are and sharpen the edges around the jaw line.
Then use your knife to indent on each side of the cheek. Roll out some black, cut out the template pieces and brush with gold luster dust.
Place a strip of white across the eye area then add the mask. Use a knife to make indents where shown on the template.
The mask shape is based on the iron man suit Mark 43 from the Avengers Age of Ultron movie.

Thors Hammer
To make Thors hammer (mjolnir) cut the kitkats to the length shown on the template and stack 3 high. “glue” together with some melted compound white chocolate. Take the left over white compound chocolate and add 1 teaspoon of milk to make it seize. We will use this for rocks.
Cut the chocolate bar to the correct length for the handle. Wrap the kitkat stack in black fondant. Roll a snake of black, dust with silver and wrap around the handle.
Add a ball of black fondant to the end of the hammer, shape and brush with silver.
Remove a circle of fondant from the base of the hammer. Turn it upside down and add some compound white chocolate to glue the handle into place. Add a thin strip of fondant around the join.

Hawk Eyes Bow and Arrow
Take a thin strip of black and line it up with the template standing it on it’s side. Then take an extra bit and roll it up at one end, trim it off and add it to the top of the bow on each side.
Roll a thin snake for the arrow, then use your fingers to shape a tip and add it to the end.
Flatten out some brown fondant and trim it to the shape shown on the template. Then using a tiny bit of water join it to the black. Then do the same on the other side. Follow the template to add strips of brown on the other lines and then use a fine piping tip to add an indent on each of the bigger solid sections.
Brush the arrow in silver and the tiny bit at the front of the bow too. Leave to dry out.

Thors Cape Buttons
Flatten out some black fondant, cut out two circles and then using a star piping tip push down into the circle to give indents around the circle. Brush with silver luster dust.

Captain Americas Shield
Cut a small circle of blue then a bigger one of red. Take out the blue sized circle from the centre of the red to make a ring and add around the blue. Cut out a black ring in the next size up, brush with silver luster dust. Then place that over the top. Repeat with red.
Use your template to cut out a star and then brush it silver and add it to the top.
Make a rounded mound of fondant slightly smaller than the shield and add the shield on top. If you don’t have a couple of days to leave this to dry out then you’ll need to add tylose to the fondant so that it dries in time for you to stand it up.captain america cake

Cakes
Now for the actual cakes, make 1 and ½ times the chocolate cake recipe and bake it three round tins 8inch (20.32 centimetres) in diameter. Then put some mixture into a wide teacup or narrow bowl this is going to be for hulk’s wrist.

Once your cakes are cool, level them off and add some simple syrup to the top of each layer.
Layer the cakes with buttercream in between them, cover the whole cake in a thin layer of frosting. Place in the fridge for 1 hour.

With the teacup cake trim off two sides to make it flatter and then cover in frosting.

Add another coat of frosting over the top of the cake smoothing as shown in the video.
Cover the cake in ivory colored fondant and trim off the excess.

Take a strong cake board and roll out some blue fondant thinly on top. Then trim around the edge using a knife.

Lift up the cake and transfer it to the cake board placing it nearer to the back. Roll out a snake of the ivory fondant and add it around the base of the cake to make the join look neat.

Cover the the tea cup cake in green fondant and make indents for tendons. Place the wrist gently on top of the cake toward the back and mark the outline. Remove the wrist and then using black gel food colour paint ‘cracks’ on the cake.
Add wrist back on top and add two cake pop sticks for support. Then push the fist down into the wrist.

Roll out some thin red fondant for Thor’s cape and drape it over one side of the cake coming up to the base of the wrist. Add the two buttons and then Thor’s hammer.

Roll a little strip of brown fondant and add it to the base of the hammer letting it drape down.

Position iron mans mask on one side of the cake and captain americas shield to the other. Then position hawk eyes bow and arrow on the cape.
Add the seized white chocolate pieces for rubble on top and around the base of the cake.
Add the birthday child’s name to the front of the cake.

Special shout out to Joyce from joyliciouscakes this cake was inspired by a cake she made, design idea used with permission. Please note she does not take orders, but you can go and show her some love on her fb page.

When you make the cake remember to put a photo of your version in the comments below, I’d love to see it.

  1. Hi there
    I love this cake
please where can I find the templates for this cake?

  2. Hi Ann,
    Your cake is AMAZING!!! (:
I want to make this cake for my boyfriend, but unfortunately rice crispies are not sold in my country. Do you have any suggestion of a replacement for those?

    • Hi Dana, Rice Crispies are a brand name. In Australia they would be called Rice Bubbles or Rice Crispies and are sold as a breakfast cereal for kids. We often used them for treats like chocolate crackes. Perhaps you have a similar cereal that you could use?

      • Hi 🙂
Thanks for your answer. Eventually I’ve found it, it’s called Rice Bubbles as you have said (I thought that it’s sold only in the cereal form…).
I’m making the cake right now! If it turns out good i’ll put some pictures (:

        THANKS AGAIN !

        • Thanks, he LOVED it 🙂

          • That’s awesome Dana. Well done!

  3. Hi Ann,
I’m attempting to make this cake for my sons birthday next week. When I made hulks fist, i still had quite a lot of the rice crispy mix left, was I suppose to use all of it? Also, what size was the cake board you used?
    Thanks 🙂

    • Hi Maddie, There is no problem if you have some mixture left over. You use the rice crispy mixture for the mask as well. The cake board is 25cm in diameter.

  4. Hi, i wana ask u if there is another chocolate other that boost that i could use couse that one is not kosher, could u give me another option to be use for the hammer. Thankss

    • Hi Vicky, Depending on where you are from there should be a range of chocolate bars you could choose. We don’t have many alternatives available in Australia, so can I suggest you look at the Hershey Bars Kosher range available local to you and select the one that will provide the best handle type shape.

  5. Hi I really want to buy the template, I tried it many times with paypal but that doesnt work. But my paypal always work with other website. do you have any idea why? Is there any way I can send payment to you and you can send me the tutorial ?thanks

    Sandra

  6. oh man 🙁 I would love to make this cake but my mom won’t allow me to buy the templates 🙁 is there another way of getting them free?

  7. good cake ann but why no ultron or black widow

  8. My girlfriend and I loved this cake and had to try our hand at making it ourselves! We made it for a friend’s birthday and have never done anything like this before, so it was a challenge, but we had fun with it! The video and templates were great. Hawkeye’s bow is along the right side, sitting on Thor’s cape. And of course, we felt like Black Widow needed to be represented, too, so we added in a symbol for her!
Thanks for the idea and the great tutorial!

    • Hi Ross, You both did an awesome job. This cake looks amazing and we love the extra touches you added.

  9. Hello Ann —

Once covered in fondant, assuming you’ve done this several hours ahead, do you recommend refrigerating the cake or maintaining it at room temperature? Thanks so much!

    • Ann, so many thanks for a wonderful recipe and video…everyone admired and enjoyed it!

      • Great work Pete, This cake looks amazing!

  10. Hi Ann
I love your cake and I feel brave enough to try to try to make it for my sons birthday that is 2 weeks far. I just printed out the templates and they look small to me , like the hammer is 6 cm x 3.5cm at the top part. and iron’s man mask is 13cm x 7.5cm. Is that correct or doI need to blow it up?

    • Hi Suhayr, the template size sounds about right. The finished cake serves about 30 small serves or 20 dessert sized portions.

  11. Thank you so much for sharing I used your templates and my cake came out great Thank you again.

    • Hi Molly, This looks fabulous. You did an awesome job!

  12. Hi Ann — amazing looking cake! Are all of the fondant and rice bubble accessories edible even if made a week ahead? Also, is there a brand of fondant you strongly recommend over others? Thanks!!

    • Hi Peter, Ann has used many different brands of fondant. The accessories are edible and should be fine if made ahead as you suggest.

  13. Could you tell me how thin you roll your fondant for covering the fist and mask? That is what I struggle with most when using fondant. Do you use the same thickness for covering the cake too?

    Thanks!

    • Hi Erin, Ann rolls her fondant out to about 3-4mm for the shapes and cake. If you are having trouble with the fondant, you may wish to try a different brand as some are harder to work with than others.

      • Thanks for the tip. It wasn’t perfect but my son loved it! Thanks for your instructions!

        • Hi Erin, It looks totally awesome to us. Well done!

  14. This cake is really cool good job ann

    • Hola, me alegro de que te gusta el pastel. Para comprar la pasta de azúcar de la plantilla de corte clic en el enlace Comprar ahora en el poste web. Gracias.

  16. Wow awsome cake. I cant seem to find the templates. Can you point me in the direcetion for them please. probably cant see for looking

  17. Wow this is soooo amazing! i’m just wondering can u do a dessert video with only cheap and not-hard-to-find-ish ingredients?

    • Agreed to u Frozen!!!

    • LUv it too much! but i agree to frozen too..

    • Hi Frozen, hard to find ingredients depend on your country, what are you having trouble finding?

      • well chocolates are the ones who are really hard to find here in the philippines.actually real chocolates here are soo expensive, and the fake ones are real cheap but even i don’t know if those are chocolates.

        • Hi Frozen Waffle, To tell if something is real chocolate look at the ingredients. If they include cocoa butter it is real chocolate. If not, then it is likely to be fake or compound chocolate.

    • Hi Frozen Waffle, Are you finding it hard to get some ingredients? Most recipes use items that can be found in a local supermarket or in a Baking Supplies store. If you can’t find a particular item, you could try Amazon.

  18. Wow maindbloing fantastik cake

  19. Holy Boom Boom! I love your cake tutorials. I know you have previously done a How to Train a Dragon cake tutorial, but I would love to see a Toothless character cake (my son is a huge fan). Thanks for sharing.

    • Thanks Nicky!

  20. WOW is all I can think of to say.

    • Hi Shirley, Thanks for the feedback.
