Operation Game Cake

I think board games should be compulsory for every family. While plying kids get to practice taking turns, resisting the urge to cheat while their sibling isn’t watching and of course not giving up when you’re losing. I have tested out the digital versions of some of the popular board games and the interaction while playing is sadly lacking. This operation game cake actually works and you can customize the sounds to suit your birthday childs age.

To make this operation board game cake you will need:

One quantity of the sponge cake baked in two trays
Double batch of vanilla buttercream recipe

Strawberry Sauce:
1 cup water
1/2 cup jam
250g (8.82 ounces) strawberries
Wash a hull your strawberries then place them in a pan with the strawberry jam and the water.
Stir that until it boils then let it simmer until the fruit becomes soft. Turn off the heat an leave that to cool.

Vanilla Simple Syrup
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla essence

Everything else:
cake board
400g (14.11 ounces) milk chocolate
400g (14.11 ounces) white chocolate
red fondant for sides
yellow fondant for sheet
point fondant for shorts
red fondant
skin tone fondant
brown fondant for the teddy bear
white fondant
powdered brown food colour
gel based food colours in black, red, white, blue and brown
silver luster dust
twirlers & chocolate or other chocolate bars (see note below*)
For the wiring:
makey makey

Once the cake is cool trim the edges. Put a small amount of buttercream onto your cake board and add your first tray cake. Note don’t cover your cake board in foil (the foil of course conducts and caused some avoidable issues).

Brush the cake with vanilla simple syrup then a layer of buttercream. Add the next cake, brush with simple syrup then cover the top and sides with buttercream.

Print out your operation game template and decide which 6 body parts you want to use. Cut those out to make it easy to mark where they are.

Spread some tempered white chocolate onto some baking paper in the size of the cake. As it is starting to set cut around the shape of the cake and then place your template on top and mark the chosen operation points. Trace around each one and remove the chocolate. Cover in baking paper and something flat like a book and leave to set.

Roll out some pink fondant and cut out the shorts shape. Cut out little hearts from the shorts, and using the same sized cutter cut our red hearts and add the to the shorts. For a tutorial on how to make your own cutters see the twitter dessert video.

Cut an extra heart squash it a flatter and then cut down the middle to make the broken heart that sits on his chest.

Follow the instruction on the video to make the teddy bear.

Once the white chocolate is set cover the bottom half on yellow for the sheet and the top half in blue for the pillows. Paint on the details, see the video for the tutorial.

Using some fondant in the colour of his skin cut around his body and hair. Place that on the cake and cut out the holes.
Add his shorts into place and then cut out and add his legs.

Using white fondant white fondant bandage his foot and begin to outline and paint the rest of the details. Add the teddy bear into place.

Cut a box to the height of the cake that fits the makey makey board.
Push white wires into the base of the makey makey board in the asdfg spots
Add red alligator clip wire into the earth connection point and add the connection for the computer.
Cut out of the sides of your box where the space needs to be for the cord to come out and where the wires are. Place make makey into the box and pull the cords and wires through the hole. Cover the whole thing in tape to water proof it.

Remove one corner of the cake and add the box into place. Cover it with buttercream.

Temper some milk chocolate and spread it onto some foil making sure it is slightly bigger than your cake. Once it is starting to set place some paper in the size of the cake over the top and draw a line around it. Measure the position of the wires on your cake and in that location on the chocolate cut out a circle using the back of a piping tip.

Add some baking paper and place a tray over the top to help stop the chocolate from curving up as it sets.

Once it is set remove the foil and add it over the top feeding the wires through the hole.

Rest the white chocolate on top and mark where each of the opening are.

Remove the white chocolate and twist the wires and curve them around to make them shorter, then spread them out so they are not together. Use some tempered chocolate to hold them into place.

Create a channel for the sauce to reach each wire, that way you don’t have wires through the whole cake, just in the corner where your box is so you can easily pull it out before serving. *I used chocolate and twizzlers to make the channels, this worked well to start with but the twizzlers eventually absorbed the moisture from the sauce and went soft allowing the current to go across the channels. I’d suggest either replacing the twizzlers with twix bars or completely covering the twizzlers in chocolate so they can’t go soft.

Add sauce into each section, making sure your sauce goes up to the wire.

Pipe some buttercream chocolate around the top and add your white chocolate piece into place to hide the twirlers (I used buttercream in the video but chocolate is better here.)

Wrap the sides of the cake in red fondant then add a snake of fondant all the way around the base.

Cut out tiny shapes to go in each of the holes, or if there will be lots of kids wanting a go you could just use mini m&m’s

Go to scratch and plug the computer cable into the computer with scratch open and attach the earth wire to tweezers.

Then it’s time to play.

Hello Ann. I am going to give this cake a go. Can I use baking chips for the tempered chocolate? Can I use plastic straws instead of twizzlers? And finally, I had extra fresh strawberries and froze them. Can I use frozen strawberries to make the syrup? Thank you!

        • Hi Grace, Yes you can use frozen strawberries instead of fresh. Baking chips – depends on the brand some are designed not the melt – eg as chocolate chips in cookies they will hold their shape. Others will work fine, so do a quick experiment and see if they melt. You could certainly try straws but obviously they will be inedible when you cut the cake. You could try using more chocolate instead. ?
