Rainbow Tie Dyed Heart Surprise Cake

rainbow tie-dyed surprise cake

Rainbow tie-dyed heart surprise cake. A beautiful bright cake with a colourful surprise inside. You can swap the heart for any shape that you have a cutter for. Or you could make your own cutter using the instructions in the twitter dessert video. Right after I finished making this cake I cut my finger. I was using scissors to cut a plastic packaging strap, it came off all of a sudden, the scissors continued on their speedy journey and went through the very tip of my finger. Several hours later I was at the hospital because it was still bleeding, despite using pressure, elevation and all the normal things. Unable to stitch it the doctor predicted four weeks for it to heal over.  So if you see me sporting a bandage in next weeks video you’ll know why. Oh and don’t try and push scissors through thick plastic strapping.

To make the rainbow tie-dyed surprise heart cake you will need:

Coloured Hearts
Makes enough hearts for two cakes 22cm (8.66 inches) long each
heart or other shape cutter, mine was 7.5cm (2.95 inches) across and 7cm (2.76 inches) tall
3 packets vanilla cake mix
5 gel colours or you can use neon colours if you prefer

White Cake
2 packets vanilla cake mix

To Decorate
500g (17.64 ounces) White fondant
Frosting (I used the frosting that was in the boxes of cake mix)
colours as used for making the cake

This cake was requested by subscribers after seeing a similar styled cake on tablespoon.com which was designed by Hungry Happenings and inspired by HandmadeCharlotte.com. Concept used with permission from all three websites.

Hello I buy cake mix and have a loaf tin do I put all the cake mix in to cake the shapes or half the mixture and for the cake again do I but half the cake mixture over the shapes

  3. Hi Ann. Back in 2015, I made a cake like this heart-surprise-inside-cake, except with a guitar cutout instead. I posted here about it previously.

I want to make another cake again, similar to this, but I also wanted to try something different. Your twitter mouse looks really interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHGav7DyPHw
However, I really want the dessert to be primarily cake, not mouse. But I’d like to have just a little bit of something else in it. Would it be possible for me to bake a surprise-inside cake, but the surprise is creameaux, mouse, ganache, gelatin, or something else? Or would that be impossible? Would the surprise-inside shape melt during the cake baking? Is there a way to prevent that from happening?
    Thanks!

  4. How long to you freeze the love hearts for?

    • Hi Laura, They need to be frozen solid so if you have a good freezer then 2 hours should be fine.

  5. I just made this came today! Instead of using vanilla for the outside, I used lemon cake. It tastes so good!!! I seriously reccomend this to anyone who is surprising someone for their birthday, or a gender reveal party (hearts are blue or pink), etc. The one problem was that when in the oven, the cake rose so much that the hearts came out the top!! It looks okay, but I would say that when adding the hearts, make sure to push them down… A lot. Good recipe!!!

    • So glad you had a great result Isabelle.

    • It appears that the trick to stopping hearts coming out the top is to have a layer of ‘cooked’ cake on the bottom, {see ‘
surprise rainbow Heart cake’} video by cupcakes

  6. Hi Ann,
I want to make this cake for my mum for her birthday which is in a week’s time. Her favourite cake flavours are carrot and chocolate so I am going to do half chocolate, half carrot. Do you think the tie dye hearts will still be able to see for the carrot cake? I am a little worried 🙂
