Shopkins Cake

shopkins cake easy by ann reardon

I am so glad Shopkins toys are loved by kids all around the world. The cute little plastic, collectable figures were invented by a fellow Aussie. Had they been around when I was a kid I’m sure that I would have been saving my pocketmoney to get some.

To make this shopkins cake you will need:

Vanilla Cake:
255g (8.99 ounces) or 1½ cups plus 1 heaped Tbsp flour
255g (8.99 ounces) or 1 cup plus 3 Tbsp sugar
1 Tablespoon baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
210mL (7.1 fluid ounces) or 3/4 cup plus 3 tsp milk (4% fat)
3 eggs
75mL (2.54 fluid ounces) or 1/4 cup plus 1 tsp oil
6oz (170.1 grams) or 180g (6.35 ounces) margarine
Silicone cupcake mold (I have this one)

Preheat the oven to 170C (338 degrees Fahrenheit)

Place the flour, sugar, salt and baking powder and margarine into a bowl and place that to one side. Then to your milk add the oil and eggs. Whisk them together with beaters until they are well combined.

Using the same beaters mix together the margarine and flour, keep going until it looks like bread crumbs then add in about 1/3 of the liquid and mix together.
Once it is combined add another third and mix that then add the rest and mix throughly.
Spray the silicone cupcake mold with cooking oil then add in your cake batter.

Place on a tray and bake in the oven for about 15 minutes.

Once they are cooked all the way through tip them out of the mold and leave to cool.

Frosting:
One and half times my orange buttercream recipe mixed with 250g (8.82 ounces) milk chocolate finely chopped.

Case
300g (10.58 ounces) Blue and 500g (17.64 ounces) purple candy melts. Or you could use white compound chocolate and colour it using oil based food coloring.
For the lid melt some blue candy melts and spread them over the inside of the cupcake mold making sure you get it all the way to the top. Do the same with the base using purple.

Fondant
15g (0.53 ounces) white
15g (0.53 ounces) black
50g (1.76 ounces) blue
15g (0.53 ounces) pink
25g (0.88 ounces) purple
20g (0.71 ounces) yellow

Orange Simple Syrup
Rind of half an orange
1/2 cup or 125g (4.41 ounces) orange juice
1/2 cup or 63g (2.22 ounces) sugar
Heat in the microwave or stovetop until the sugar dissolves. Strain to remove rind and allow to cool before using.

Pink luster dust or powdered food coloring

Assembly

Cut the cake into layers

Line the lid with an even layer of frosting. Place the smallest layer of cake down the bottom and brush it with orange flavoured simple syrup, then add a layer of frosting. Add the next layer of cake, brush with syrup, then add a layer of frosting. Top with your final layer of cake, syrup and frosting. Then repeat that with the base of the cupcake and place them both in the fridge.

For the eyes roll out some white fondant and cut out two circles. Then cut two smaller circles of black and using a little water attach them to one side of the white.
Use a straw to cut a tiny circle of white and add it on top of the black positioning them in the same place on each eye.

Roll a thick snake of blue and cut it to size for the candle, cut it bigger than you think because you can always shorten it later.

Roll a ball of yellow then roll it on one side to make a long teardrop shape and bend over the top, then add it to the candle.

Loosen the mold from around the top then place it on a cup and carefully bend the silicone all the way down and lift off the cupcake.

Place it on a cake stand and add the eyes making sure the white dot is facing the same direction.

Roll a tiny snake of black and cut it into equal sections. Roll it again to taper out the ends and then cut it in half. Then add those like eyelashes around the eye with one on the top and two on the bottom.

For the lips roll a ball of pink, flatten it slightly and pinch the base to make a triangle shape then round the bottom. Add the lips onto the cupcake.
For the feet roll a ball of purple and cut it in two.
Flatten each one slightly then add it to the base of the cupcake just under the lips.

In her hands she is holding a present and a card. Cut those out of blue fondant, the same colour as your candle.

Then roll a thick snake of purple and cut it in two for the arms.

Using some water to make it stick add the present and then place the arm on top.

For the other side make a cut for the hand to hold the card and place the card in the gap then add it to the side of the cupcake.
Then add a tiny ball of purple for the nose.

Tip the top upside down on some baking paper and peel off the mold.

Spray with some food colour or you could dust with pink luster dust and add the candle to one side. Add the top to the cupcake positioning it so the top slightly overlaps the base on all sides.

And there you have a delicious chocolate orange mary present shopkins cake.

  1. Do you know what shopkin this is?

  2. Hi, Ann! 🙂 I heard in another one of your videos that you used vanilla flavored simple syrup. While I like the taste of the orange flavored one, my sister doesn’t, so how do you make the vanilla flavored simple syrup??? Plzz

  3. Does the cake need to be refrigerated? Will the candy mould melt at room temperature?

    • Hi Karen, It should be stable at room temperature but I would be cautious of hot environments. It would be best stored in a cool place out of direct sunlight.

Hi I am really excited to try and make this cake for my niece but, I have never worked with fondant before, where do you get your fondant from?

    • Hi Michelle, Ann uses a variety of brands and usually gets them from cake decorating stores and online suppliers. The best brand will vary from country to country so it is good to chat with someone who bakes locally. Ann has done a review of fondants that can be purchased in Australia: https://www.howtocookthat.net/public_html/the-great-fondant-review-which-fondant-is-best/ . Ann recommends buying a small quantity to start with and get use to working with it. If you find it a bit dry or hard to work with, then try a different brand. Fondant is easy to use but a little practice will give a much better result.

  5. Will my cake be too small if I halve the recipe?I don’t want to make a shopkins cake,I just like the cake recipe,it’s really easy…
    Thank you!

    • Hi Ada, If you just want a small cake then it will be fine. If you want a good size cake to feed a few people then keep it the same.

Oh wow, that cake is amazing! And looking at your instructions, it even seemed like I could make it without messing up too much. How many years of experience do you have making amazing cakes like that?
I was actually searching around the web for stuff that will help me teach more ‘Cooking for Beginners’ classes on Skillshare but this is far too advanced. I love your site for my own baking, though. I’ve already added a bookmark and I’ll be sure to come back here to find inspiration for my next weekend off.

    • That is great to hear Ilona.

  11. Hi there, can you please tell me if one packet of candy melts (one of each colour obviously) is enough to coat the entire mould? Thank you.

    • Hi Glenda, It will depend on the size of the packet. You will probably need about 500 grams of purple melts and 300 grams of blue melts.
