Treasure Chest Fortnite Cake

Every school holidays we seem to stumble upon an app, a computer game or a ps4 game that becomes the competition over the break. This time around it was Fortnite Battle Royale, a first person shooter where you compete against one hundred others to try and take out the victory royale. The fact that I’ve never played this type of shooting game before should be a disadvantage but as it turns out being a bit more strategic got me further in the game than expected. Hidden throughout the game are chests like the one below that contain weapons, medical kits and other useful items. You can hide what you like inside this treasure chest.

To make the fortnite treasure chest you will need:

Template

Gingerbread
860g (30.34 ounces) or 4 cups butter or margarine
860g (30.34 ounces) or 4 cups caster sugar
1000g (35.27 ounces) or 2 2/3 cups glucose syrup
4 tsp bicarb
6 tablespoons cinnamon
4 tablespoons cloves
6 tablespoons ginger
210mL (7.1 fluid ounces) milk
2390g (84.3 ounces) or 15 cups flour

Mix together the sugar, butter and glucose syrup until light and fluffy. Add in the bicarb and spices then add the flour and milk.

If your mixing bowl is not big enough you can tip it onto the counter and knead to form a soft dough.

Roll and cut as shown in the video. Bake at 180C (356 degrees Fahrenheit) until golden brown. Once cooled if they are bendy they are not done enough, flip over and bake again so it can dry out.

Sponge cake (I used three 8″ round cakes and four 8″ x 6″ rectangle cakes to make this many you will need to make 5 times the sponge cake recipe).

Buttercream
few drops black gel food coloring
240g (8.47 ounces) or 1 cup margarine
630g (22.22 ounces) or 5 cups icing sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla essence

Whip together all ingredients with an electric mixer for a few minutes until light and fluffy.

Other
Cocoa powder (to dust the gingerbread)
950g (33.51 ounces) Chocolate
900g (31.75 ounces) Black Fondant
100g (3.53 ounces) Green fondant (2 shades is best for the grass)
Silver luster dust
cardboard cake board that you can cut to size
wooden base board (mine is mdf 45cm (17.72 inches) x 50cm (19.69 inches) with a 1cm (0.39 inches) wooden cube stuck to each corner to make it easier to pick up off the counter).
4 cake pop sticks (to support the cake board)
dry ice (optional)
fortnite treasure chest cake slurp juice
bright torch
yellow or orange lighting gel

1. Make your gingerbread pieces, once cooled you can store in an airtight container for a few days.
2. Make the fondant details that need to be made ahead (see the video).

3. Bake the cakes, allow them to cool then make the buttercream.
4. Assemble the chest using chocolate.

5. Assemble the cake, don’t forget to add the light.
6. When you are ready to serve – remove the lid and add the jar of hot liquid – you can use water or cordial anything will work as long as it is hot. Add a scoop of dry ice and replace the lid. Note – the dry ice gas is carbon dioxide so it will put out your candles if they are too low, choose tall ones.

    Hello there,

I am going to make the Fortnite Battle Bus this year, was wondering if this would be one you may consider to make, I made a different Fortnite one last year and imagine there will be many more to come, unless there are any others you can think of which are more cake based?

    Hi Ann,
I love all your cakes 🙂 I’m about to make & our Shaw’s the template of the treasure chest for Saturday (my sons party) my question is how far ahead can I make/build the treasure chest? I would like to start baking & buildibg on Wednesday (just to make sure it turns out right) …
I’m very scared & excited at the same time!!!

      *phurches the template *

    • Hi Mervat, gingerbread will last a long time so long as it’s wrapped in plastic. I think you could make it a couple of weeks before the party although of course you’d have to make the cake base close to the party. Have fun 🙂

        Thanks Ann 🙂
Can I also build it few days before the party & wrap it?

        Your awesome!

  7. Hello!
I’d like to know if it’s possible to resize the template to the measure we need. I don’t know how large is it, but I’d like to fit it in my cake measure. If I can do that, I proceed buying the template. Let me tell you: you are AMAZING!

    • yes you can scale it down simply by printing it at a smaller percentage. (At the moment it will print out over several pages if you print it at 100% on your printer … the ingredients are for that size cake). Obviously you will need to scale down your ingredients if you’re making it smaller 🙂

how many batches did you do for the gingerbread? I suppose 15 cups of flour won’t fit in my kitchenaid, or yes? Mine is 6.7lt.

Sorry, I saw the complete video later. So, I’ve resized the template to 80% and i’ve used 80% of the ingredients, but I had lot of remaining batch. I keep it in case I need to re bake a part, I hope not!

I was wondering one thing (just thought that after I’ve baked all!): if the weather is very hot, do you think I can still make it? I was thinking to put a glass with ice inside the chest. The other possibility, is to use royal glace instead of chocolate. What do you recomend???? The birthday is on 29. How much time before can I assemble the chest?

        Thank!

        • Hi Flavia, It after that date now, so I am guessing you made a great plan. How did it go. Do post a pic so we can see the results? I would have assembled the chest the day prior and used a bowl inside the chest for the dry ice.

            Hello!
Well, it was very hard, because I decided by the chocolate…and 2 days before the party, it went broken. I always had problems with temperate chocolate, and even if i’ve follow all the steps exactly, probably the chocolate was not the best and it was never really hard as shown in your videos. But….I’ve all done, so I decided to do royal icing with cocoa powder added, and it came the same exact color of the chocolate. Then I’ve put lots of icing everywhere, even where not needed, to be sure it won’t be cracked.
It was ok, not like yours obviously, but pretty nice for my possibilities. The other big problem was the dry ice. Here in Italy you can buy only since 5kg….and I didn’t want that! I used little co2 cans to produce it, but nothing. No smoke for me. Anyhow, it was a goal. All were very excited!
            Thank you!!!!!

          • Hi Flavia, It looks beautiful! Well done!

We don’t have any glucose or corn syrup do u have to have it.

    • Hi Malvin, For best results it is worth getting some. You can get it at the supermarket or chemist.

hi can I use corn syrup for the gingerbread?
can I use water or something not dairy for the gingerbread instead of milk?
    thank you
    btw amazing cake

    • Hi Vicky, yes, you can swap the glucose syrup for corn syrup. For the milk you could try water but I think you’d be better using a non-dairy milk like soy or almond so it still has the protein content. ?

        thank you!!! 🙂

Here is the Fortnite chest cake I made for my son’s 14th birthday. I used sugar cookie dough, so I had to cut my cookie shapes after a flat piece of dough was baked. I texturized and painted the wood strips with cocoa powder after they were baked and then cut to shape. It didn’t all line up as perfect as the one here, but it looked pretty good and my son loved it. I painted the fondant strips with gel food coloring. Thank you so much for the pattern and video! This made it go so much quicker. Oh, I also used your frozen and then cut buttercream technique for the rocks…it was awesome. Definitely something I will use again in the future.

    • Wow looks wonderful Niki, fantastic job. Happy Birthday to your son.

    • Hu Niki, I love your creation. Great ideas and looks amazing!

For the treasure chest, What temperature do I cook the gingerbread at and for how long!!! I’m about to make them and I’m afraid I’m going to mess it up.

    • Hi Renee, It will dpend on your oven and the depth of your tray. Bake until golden brown and firm.
