Amongst the excitement and nervousness about being a new mum there is also a growing list of stuff that you need to buy. Baby showers often help tick a few items off that list. If you’ve managed to keep the gender of your baby a secret up until this point a gender reveal cake can be a fun way to make that announcement. If everyone already knows, you could swap out the color for vanilla or chocolate cake.

To make this pregnant belly cake you will need:

Vanilla Cake
520g (18.34 ounces) plain flour
6 tsp baking powder
450g (15.87 ounces) or 2 cups plus 1 tablespoon of sugar
420g (14.82 ounces) or 2 cups of butter or margarine
220ml or 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons of milk
6 eggs
160g (5.64 ounces) or 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons of oil
1 tsp vanilla
blue or pink coloring
Preheat the oven to 180C (356 degrees Fahrenheit)

Add the baking powder to the flour and whisk that together to aerate it.

In another bowl whisk together the margarine, sugar, milk, oil, eggs and vanilla on high speed until light and fluffy. Add in the coloring of your choice along with dry ingredients. Mix on low speed until just combined.

Split the mixture between a lined and greased tray, 8″ round cake tin and an 8″ bowl.

Bake in the oven, cooking times will vary with the bowl being ready first.

600g (21.16 ounces) red fondant
200g (7.05 ounces) skin tone of your choice
1 cup candy
150g (5.29 ounces) white chocolate
acetate or chocolate transfer sheet
lace texture mat (optional)

Following the directions on the video make a chocolate ring and circle lid.

Once the cake is baked and cooled level and trim off the edges.

Mix up a batch of buttercream and color it to the same blue as the cake.

Using a cookie cutter cut a hole in the center of the round cake. Add the ring of cake on top of the tray cake and cut the hole through to the cake board.
Using some buttercream secure the ring of cake into place.

Then place the two little circles on top and trim the top of the cake. Trim down and around shaping the sides of the cake. Cut another circle from the left over top piece and add it to tray cake circle to even them up. Now cut two smaller circles and place them on top.

Layer all those pieces using buttercream then shape following the directions in the video.

Add the chocolate circle into the center of the belly and fill it up with blue or pink candy. And add your chocolate circle on top like a lid. Cover it in buttercream and add the bowl cake on top for the rounded belly.

Cover the whole cake in buttercream spreading a little down the bottom edge towards the cake board so the dress will come down smoothly.

Roll out some fondant for the skin and make one edge really thin so that we don’t get a line along the tummy.

Place the fondant over the top and lift and smooth it down the edges. Trim close to the cake but not too close, you don’t want to see blue footing peeping out.

Make the dress out of red fondant using the directions in the video.

<h7 class="updated">Copyright © 2016 Reardon Media Pty Ltd.
