Yes this week\u2019s offering is both an optical illusion Space Invaders cake as well as a Disco cake. Take note, to fully appreciate these cakes you simply MUST watch the video because it really MOVES. I\u2019m not talking about moving you emotionally or sparking memories of your younger days at the pinball arcade or disco (although it might do that too) \u2026 no, I mean it really moves &#8211; spinning around, up and down, in-and-out via a wonderful optical illusion! <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qAxeabvd_eQ?list=UUsP7Bpw36J666Fct5M8u-ZA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"fn\">To make this space invaders cake you will need:<\/h4>\n<p>A cake tin that is 22cm (8.66 inches) diameter, 5cm (1.97 inches) deep<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ingredient\"><span class=\"amount\">250g (8.82 ounces) or approx 1 2\/3 cups<\/span> <span class=\"name\">strawberries<\/span><\/span> washed, hulled and dried<br \/>\n125g (4.41 ounces) or approx 1\u00bc cups blueberries washed and dried<br \/>\n125g (4.41 ounces) or approx 1\u00bc cups raspberries washed and dried<\/p>\n<p>Black fondant 200g (7.05 ounces)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtocookthat.net\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/space-invaders-topper.pdf\">Space Invaders Topper Printout<\/a><br \/>\nMilk chocolate<br \/>\nWhite chocolate<br \/>\n2 lolly pop sticks<\/p>\n<p>3 edible icing sheets printed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtocookthat.net\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/spaceinvaders.pdf\">space invaders design for icing<\/a><br \/>\nOR assorted candies, 300g (10.58 ounces) colourful fondant and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtocookthat.net\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/cake-spacing-guide.pdf\">cake spacing guide<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Video camera set to 1\/500 shutter speed<\/p>\n<p>Record Player<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sponge Cake<\/strong><br \/>\n360g (12.7 ounces) or 2\u00bc cups plain or all-purpose flour<br \/>\n360g (12.7 ounces) or 1 2\/3 cups sugar<br \/>\n1 Tbsp baking powder<br \/>\n1 tsp salt<br \/>\n2 tsp gelatine powder<br \/>\n140millilitres (4.73 fluid ounces) or 3\/4 cup vegetable oil such as canola oil<br \/>\n280millilitres (9.47 fluid ounces) or 1 cup plus 2 Tbsp water<br \/>\n8 egg yolks<br \/>\n8 egg whites<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qgG6-P0h9XU?list=UUsP7Bpw36J666Fct5M8u-ZA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Preheat the oven to 320F (160 degrees Celsius)<\/p>\n<p>Place your flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and gelatin into a bowl and whisk.<\/p>\n<p>Make a well in the centre of the flour mixture then pour in the oil, egg yolks and water, do not stir.<\/p>\n<p>In a seperate bowl whisk the egg whites and cream of tartar on high speed until you get soft peaks.<\/p>\n<p>Mix together the flour mixture for 30 seconds only or until just combined. Don\u2019t over-mix this.<\/p>\n<p>Using a spatula to fold in your egg whites in three batches.<\/p>\n<p>Line but do not grease two 20cm (7.87 inches) cake tins and spread the mixture evenly between the two.<\/p>\n<p>Bake in a slow oven, 320F (160 degrees Celsius) for 1 hour and 10 minutes<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ganache Frosting<\/strong><br \/>\n350millilitres (11.83 fluid ounces) or 1\u00bd cups <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtocookthat.net\/public_html\/cream-use\/\" title=\"What cream should I use?\" target=\"_blank\">cream<\/a><br \/>\n1.2kg (2.65 pounds) white chocolate<\/p>\n<p>Break the chocolate into pieces and place into a bowl. Heat the cream to just boiling and pour over the chocolate. Allow to sit for a minute and then stir until smooth.
