10 years on are GMO’s safe, what have we learnt?

GMO’s have been around for decades, so what have we learnt? Are they safe for humans? How about the environment?

There are two types of modern GMO’s, cisgenic and transgenic. Cisgenic refers to transferring a specific gene from an organism that is the same type. For example taking a gene from a wild potato and putting it into a conventional potato. Transgenic takes a gene from an organism that is not related. Like adding a bt gene from a bacteria into corn, so that the corn plant produces a toxin that will kill corn ear worm.

The USA has had both of these in use in animal and human foods for some time, while the EU has not. Watch the interview to find out why and see what we’ve learnt from years of use.

With thanks to Ewin Mullins from Teagasc, The Agriculture and Food Development Authority in Ireland for his expertise and time.
