by Ann Reardon How To Cook That

I have been busy over the last year planning, writing and overseeing the photography and layout for my first ever cookbook! There are heaps of my favourite dessert recipes in there with a chapter on pastries, ice-cream, yummy cakes, artistic desserts and of course chocolate desserts. Each chapter has its own intro explaining the food science that you'll need to know for success every time. Booksellers where you can purchase your very own copy:

All recipe quantities in the book are in grams, ounces and cups.

  1. Hi there and thank you so much for this tutorial!
I am recreating your cake for my mom’s birthday next week and I wanted to double check the size of the cake, is it 6 inches a side?
As it will be for 6 adults and 3 children, would I be able to adjust the fondant/chocolate amounts to allow for a 9 inch square cake size? And how so?

I appreciate you taking the time!
Again, many many thanks from Toronto 🙂

    • Hi Anisa the cake is 15cm (5.91 inches) x 15cm (5.91 inches) x 7.5cm (2.95 inches) tall (vanilla / chocolate). That is close to 6 inches a side. To change it to a 9 inch cake yo would need approximately 2.25 times the original quantity of cake to start. Having said that, the 6 inch square cake would easily make 12 serves so for the number you are feeding it should be big enough.

  13. Hi I was just wondering how do you make your cakes rise because mine usually turn out to be about 2-3cm tall!! Thanks x

    • Hi Katie, cakes rise either form the air you’ve incorporated into them and from rising agents like baking powder

  14. Ann, I finally got round to making the larger cake for my sister’s birthday! It was so much fun to make and went down a storm. My only edit was that I didn’t have a square cake like the app shape so I used a round tin, but love it all the same 🙂 Thank you for your fantastic ideas and recipes, you are so talented and I love learning from you. 18. Hello Ann! I love all the videos. Thank you for posting them. I am in the process of making the candy crush cake for my mom for her birthday. And my chocolate is way runny compared to yours. While I have not yet checked out the videos in the chocolate section… I’m wondering what chocolate you are using for this project. I am using Merckens Candy Melts.

    • Hi Janelle, if you allow it to cool it firms up as it is cooling so if it is too runny, just let it sit a little, but move the bag around so it doesn’t just set in the corners until it is a good consistency.

      • Thanks Ann! Here’s a photo of the cake. It turned out great! Thanks again for the tutorial!

        • that looks great Janelle
