Churros Recipe with Chocolate

churros recipe receta

Enjoy a pot of pure melted chocolate next to cinnamon and sugar coated churros.  This churros recipe shows you how to make curly churros and the straight ones just like you find at san churros cafe.

Churros Recipe Ingredients

250millilitress or 1 cup water
1/2 cup or 110g (3.88 ounces) butter
1 cup or 160g (5.64 ounces) plain all-purpose flour
3 eggs
1 Tbsp sugar
1 tsp vanilla

Cinnamon Sugar
1/4 cup or 55g (1.94 ounces) sugar
1 Tbsp ground cinnamon

Chocolate pot
100g (3.53 ounces) milk chocolate

1L (0.26 gallons) oil for deep frying if making curly churros

Churros batter
Melt the butter and the water in a saucepan.
Add the flour stirring continuously. Keep stirring over the heat until the mixture thickens and clumps together into a smooth ‘ball’ (see video).
Remove form the heat and briskly stir in the eggs one at a time.
Add the vanilla and sugar and mix well.
Spoon into a piping bag fitted with a star shaped nozzle (you can make them round if you prefer).

Curly Churros
Heat the oil to 182°C (359.6 degrees Fahrenheit) (or 360°F (182.22 degrees Celsius) ). Pipe churros batter straight into the hot oil. Use your fingers or a knife to break off the batter when it is the required length. Once the churros are browned lift out and put onto a plate covered with some paper towel to drain.

Straight Churros

Bake in the oven 200C (392 degrees Fahrenheit) for 12 minutes or until crisp on the outside and soft in the middle.

As soon as your churros come out of the hot oil or oven sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.

Melt your chocolate in the microwave (30 seconds stir, 20 seconds stir, 10 seconds stir, repeat 10 secs stir until melted). OR melt in a bowl resting over a pan, with simmering water at the bottom. Make sure the water is not touching the bowl and stir continuously until melted. Pour the chocolate into a small serving bowl. Serve churros warm.

  1. My mixture is very runny even though I followed all directions as it is.What went wrong?

    • Hi Cassie, It sounds like the flour hasn’t cooked during the mixing process. The recipe says: Add the flour stirring continuously. Keep stirring over the heat until the mixture thickens and clumps together into a smooth ‘ball’ (see video).
As the flour cooks the mixture thickens up and looks like a light dough.

  2. Hi Ann. I had a bit of a problem when i was frying these “churros”…. When I piped the batter into the oil, the batter immedietly rised and started to bubble, and the shaped turnt circular.. After it turned out gloden brown it turnt out pretty floppy and very light, not much like a churro would be. Any mistake I made during the process of making the batter? My guess is that there might have been too many air.

    • Hi Ally, I think you are probably right. It sounds like the batter was over mixed. You can have a similar problem if you leave the batter sit for too long.Hope it works out better next time.

  3. How many churros can I get from this recipe ?

    • Hi Domenica, The number of churros you will get will depend on the size you make them. This qantity makes a good snack size for around 4 people.Personally I would like to eat the lot myself!

  4. Hi Ann, may I know how much do you mean by ‘cup’ in each ingredient? Eg. 1/2 cup butter. But may I know the weight please? Thanks and I’m so excited to try it this weekend!

    • Hi Eileen,
Those measurements should be visible on the blog page for you.
I have pasted them below for your convenience:
250ml or 1 cup plus 1 tbsp water
      1/2 cup or 100g (3.53 ounces) butter
1 cup or 157g (5.54 ounces) plain all purpose flour
      3 or 150g (5.29 ounces) eggs
      1 tablespoon sugar
      1 teaspoon of vanilla

      Cinnamon Sugar
      1/4 cup or 54g (1.9 ounces) sugar
      1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

      Chocolate pot
      100g (3.53 ounces) milk chocolate

  6. Is there any recipie for salty churros

    • Hi Martin, Ann hasn’t experimented with leaving the sugar out of the churros recipe. If you try it, let us know how it goes.

  10. Tasted so good after we cooked it I had one and I left the kitchen and when I came back there was no more

    • Hi Laura, A lot of people have the same issue at their place! I suggest making them when every one is out!

      • We love watching your vids you do such grate recipes

  11. I decided at 9pm (South African time) that I would make churros… Best.Decision.Ever! I loved it and it worked excellently, I added one more egg(we had smaller eggs) and because I didnt have chocolate on hand I made a chocolate sauce, thanks for the great recipe 🙂

    • That’s great Akira. What an awesome late night snack!

  12. Do you perhaps have a nice caramel sauce recipe? In South Africa I ate a similar treat. It was deepfried with a caramel sauce in the middle of the treat. Thank you, I’m a new and huge fan of your work!

    • The caramel sauce I think you’re talking about is called dulce de leche. It is often served with churros in Spain and South America. There are quite a few recipes out there, many that are simple. I hope this helps.

    • She has a video on how to make dulce de leche on youtube hope it help 😀

    • Hi Christelle, The girls are on right. You could try the dulce de leche. I think it would be yummy!

  13. That sounds amazing. I want to make it.

  14. We made this recipe but we all love the fried churros. The bake churros is not crispy at all. All in all love it

  15. I made both and the one in the oil was grose… The one in the oven did not look as a churros at al! The butter would not mix with the mixture so it looked like a pool of butter on my bakingpaper! But it tasted great! And I think thet I made a mistake….;)

    • Hi Anne, Oh dear… do have another go. Make sure your oil is hot enough if you are cooking them in oil. From the sounds of it you might need to mix your batter for longer to ensure it is fully incorporated. Hope the second attempt is more successful for you.

  16. amazing work

  17. I am making these on Saturday! I had a question, do I use 2 eggs or 3? It says 3 on the website, but I only seen 2 eggs in your tutuorial. Thank you!

    • Well Madison,

In the tutorial she said,”repeat with all your eggs”.

    • I’m sorry Madison she actually said ,”then repeat that”

    • Hi Madison,
Just following up this query and yes the recipe states 3 eggs and that is what you will need. On the video you just see some of the process. Hope your churros went well!

  18. cant wait for me and my mom to make these!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. Hi I want to ask you that the flour is use high gluten flour or low gluten flour?

    • And I want to ask how many gram of one cup of flour?

      • Hi Celai ching, 1 cup of flour would be about 155grams.

    • Hi Celai ching, Ann used plain all purpose flour which cold be described as low gluten flour. High gluten flours are not general prpose and you might use it for bread making or something similar. Hope that helps.

  20. Yum, another awesome recipe of yours! super easy to make too, thanks for sharing…nothing left on the plate 🙂 Love your work!

    • they look great evangeline
