How To Make a Fire Truck Cake

fire truck engine birthday cake

“Can I (excited gasp) have a firetruck cake for my birfday? With a ladder and, and (insert excited movements here) and a fire hose?” Big smiles. This request came as no surprise, fire trucks and fire engines take pride of place in every game whether it be in the house, sandpit, bath or the car. There must be some sort of rescue vehicle present. Preferably a firetruck with a ladder but at a pinch a yellow taxi can pass as a rescue car when back up is needed.

My baby boy is turning three! Which means this blog is also turning three. I posted the very first recipe when he was just one week old. It is amazing how little things can grow into big things in such a short space of time. While my now three year old is a big boy and wants to do everything himself, I am much the opposite. The bigger the website gets the more I am asking for help. Thus far I have programmed, coded and debugged everything on the website, but I have now reached the stage that I am going to need some help so hopefully within the next few months the website will have a bit of a makeover to make it run smoothly on all devices.

This cake serves 20, you can scale it up if you want to serve more.

To make the fire truck cake, you will need:

* The Fire Truck Template

Buy$5.99

* Fondant: Light Grey 111g (3.92 ounces), Dark Grey 70g (2.47 ounces), Red 1 kg (2.2 pounds), Black 200g (7.05 ounces), White 200g (7.05 ounces), Yellow 20g (0.71 ounces), Blue 20g (0.71 ounces)
* 6 mini oreos
* Fondant extruder to make the hose (optional)
* Gold luster dust for the end of the hose (optional)
* Green food colouring for grass
* Cake:  Double the sponge cake recipe baked either in trays or in a box 25cm (9.84 inches) x 25cm (9.84 inches) x 10cm (3.94 inches) deep. If baked in a large tin or box expect it to take at least 2 hours to bake. Only use boxes that do not use glue and do not have plastic laminated shiny pictures on them.
* Frosting double recipe of frosting of your choice, I used the french buttercream. See the recipes and taste tests for seven different frostings.
* Cake leveller or serrated knife to cut the cake
* Cake board to put the cake on, the one I used was 25cm (9.84 inches) x 38cm (14.96 inches)
* Firm cardboard to support the base of the firetruck

  1. Hi Hyun Choi, You should have received an email as well with the download link. I will forward your comment to tech support so they can help you if it hasn’t been sorted already.

  2. Hello,
this is an amazing cake and wonderful tutorial. My son’s 3rd birthday is coming up in October and he has requested a Fireman Sam cake which I would love to achieve for him and this cake would be perfect, I have never worked with fondant but would love to make this cake or have it made.
Can i ask where are you based and do you make cakes for people to purchase? and where could I purchase the fondant for this recipe in the colours and quantities that you mention are required to make this cake? Thanks Arijana

    • Hi Arijana, Ann is based in Australia and doesn’t make cakes to order. You can buy fondant from cake decorating stores and online suppliers.

  3. Hello Ann!

I am from Austria and I found that fantastic cake tutorial on you tube. I have to make also a cake like this for a special party.

I want you to ask if you could send me your paper draft from this fire engine?

    That would be so nice!

I am looking forward to hear from you 🙂

    All the best

    Bettina

    • Hi Bettina, you can purchase all the templates via the shop page: https://www.howtocookthat.net/public_html/shop-cook/

      • can we get template for cake for 40 people .Scaling often disturbs the propotion..had a bad experience with scaling car car template last time

  4. I LOVE your cake ideas and tutorials! I made this firetruck cake for my son’s 2nd birthday last year (my first-ever fondant cake!), and plan to do the Lightning McQueen cake in a couple months for his 3rd. He is so excited! I have been trying to find an equally good tutorial for my girl’s 1st birthday, and can’t find one! Any chance you’d venture a woodland cake for a little girl’s birthday??? 🙂 🙂

    • Hi Casey, This cake looks fantastic. What an awesome effort for your first 3D & fondant cake. The woodland cake is a great suggestion. Ann receives many requests every week. It just isn’t possible to do them all. Having said that, you never know what might be coming up. In the meantime you could consider doing a variation on the epic Minecraft village cake: https://www.howtocookthat.net/public_html/epic-minecraft-cake-village/ . It wouldn’t be too difficult to add more trees, flowers and fields etc.

      • Yes, I’m sure Ann gets LOTS of requests! Thanks for the suggestion of the Minecraft Village – I’ll have a look.

  5. Hi Anne, Ive just purchased your Fire truck template and i’m about to attempt my very first cake *gulp!!* I just have a few questions about getting started.
    1. How long can I make the cake (fully decorated) before using it? e.g the party is on saturday, can i make the cake on thursday night and keep in fridge for over 24 hours?
    2. Is there a limit to how long it can be in the fridge? i’ve heard you shouldn’t put fondant in the fridge?
    3. Can i decorate half the cake one night and finish it off the next day? i.e. keep adding to cake?
Many thanks and a tad nervous!!

    • Hi Elizabeth, You can make the cake a day or two ahead, but it won’t taste as good as fresh. Some people say never to store fondant cakes in the fridge and that it is better to store them in a cool place (eg. 20C or less). IN Australia, our climate is very warm, so Ann stores most of her cakes in the fridge. Once a cake is totally covered in fondant, you can put it in the fridge overnight, but be aware that when you take it out, you will get moisture condensation on the fondant. In most cases this will disappear as you leave it out on the bench to come up to room temperature. You can’t put the cake in the freezer. Ann usually decorates her cakes in one go. IT is best to do all your decorating the day before if you can.

  6. A second picture

  7. Lorenzo wanted a fire truck for his birthday! I really enjoye making il thank you for you website!!

  8. Thank you so much for helping me to make my 3 year old his fire engine cake! Looked awesome

    • Thanks Kirstin. So glad your cake turned out well.

  9. Hello. I live in Belgium and would also like to buy the firetruck template, but unfortunately the “buy it now” button does not respond. Could you send me the instructions regarding payment? Thank you very much in advance.

    • Hi M.W. , Everything is working at this end. You could try using our shop page https://www.howtocookthat.net/public_html/shop-cook/ as the template is available there also. Perhaps check if links are disabled at your end, also. I have also forwarded your comment to Tech support for assistance.

  10. bonjour, je suis en France J’aimerai commander le modèle du camion de pompier. Est ce possible ?

  11. Hi Ann,
Can I use your chocolate cake recipe for this? What quantity? From memory I made 1 & 1/2., What size tins?
Last year I made my son the Thomas cake & I’m still getting rave reviews about the awesome cake I made 🙂
    Thanks,
    Kathy

    • Hi Kathy, Yes you can use the chocolate cake recipe. Use double quantities and the same size containers as used in the Fire Truck Container. So good to hear that your Thomas Cake was a success.

      • Thanks Ann 🙂 I forgot to mention I need to upscale that. Do I just add a few centimetres more when I cut the cake & fondant parts? Or can you recommend another way to do it?
        Regards
        Kathy

        • Hi Kathy, I would suggest just enlarging the template. It would be more accurate and a lot easier for you.

  12. Hi Ann. it will be my first cake to my son. it seen dificult a bit for a father but i will cooparete with my wife. i will share my first cake experiance with you. Thank you for everthink. Greeting from Turkey:)

  13. Hi, I have purchased a 25cm x 25cm square cake tin to make a fire engine cake. This one looks great & thankfully you’ve suggested the same size. To confirm, am I supposed to double the quantity in the recipe that you have linked (i.e 14 eggs!)? If so, is this based on putting all the mixture in the same tin? If I was to use 2 tins would I just split the mixture? I am making this cake for Sunday when my son will be 3 and is obsessed with fire engines, he to requested a nee naw cake…no pressure then :-0 Many thanks for your time

    • Hi katie, Yes, double the sponge cake recipe. How deep is your tin? I used a box 10cm deep. You may need to do 4 trays if your tins are just shallow. Hope that helps.

  14. Just fantastic – Can’t wait to have a go…. 🙂

  15. I love your cake. I have to make an ambulance cake for my nephews wedding. Have you ever made one of those? I would be glad to purchase a template or any type of help. Thank you, SHEILA

  16. Hi thanks it worked this morning, maybe I just had to restart my computer. Thank you

  17. Hi there. Can my son and your son be best friends? Lol. The description you gave sounds just like my son who is turning 3 in a week. Hope your son enjoyed his birthday. ☺

  18. ;-))

  19. …but 3-D version is better

  20. 😉
