How To Make a Fire Truck Cake
“Can I (excited gasp) have a firetruck cake for my birfday? With a ladder and, and (insert excited movements here) and a fire hose?” Big smiles. This request came as no surprise, fire trucks and fire engines take pride of place in every game whether it be in the house, sandpit, bath or the car. There must be some sort of rescue vehicle present. Preferably a firetruck with a ladder but at a pinch a yellow taxi can pass as a rescue car when back up is needed.
My baby boy is turning three! Which means this blog is also turning three. I posted the very first recipe when he was just one week old. It is amazing how little things can grow into big things in such a short space of time. While my now three year old is a big boy and wants to do everything himself, I am much the opposite. The bigger the website gets the more I am asking for help. Thus far I have programmed, coded and debugged everything on the website, but I have now reached the stage that I am going to need some help so hopefully within the next few months the website will have a bit of a makeover to make it run smoothly on all devices.
This cake serves 20, you can scale it up if you want to serve more.
To make the fire truck cake, you will need:
* The Fire Truck Template
* Fondant: Light Grey 111g (3.92 ounces), Dark Grey 70g (2.47 ounces), Red 1 kg (2.2 pounds), Black 200g (7.05 ounces), White 200g (7.05 ounces), Yellow 20g (0.71 ounces), Blue 20g (0.71 ounces)
* 6 mini oreos
* Fondant extruder to make the hose (optional)
* Gold luster dust for the end of the hose (optional)
* Green food colouring for grass
* Cake: Double the sponge cake recipe baked either in trays or in a box 25cm (9.84 inches) x 25cm (9.84 inches) x 10cm (3.94 inches) deep. If baked in a large tin or box expect it to take at least 2 hours to bake. Only use boxes that do not use glue and do not have plastic laminated shiny pictures on them.
* Frosting double recipe of frosting of your choice, I used the french buttercream. See the recipes and taste tests for seven different frostings.
* Cake leveller or serrated knife to cut the cake
* Cake board to put the cake on, the one I used was 25cm (9.84 inches) x 38cm (14.96 inches)
* Firm cardboard to support the base of the firetruck

Dear Ann, thanks so much for your wonderful, well explained videos. The whole family (including non-baking man 😉 ) has become fans. My own little fireman turned three and loved the cakes i adapted from your instructions (for the party @ daycare i used your template for a quick’n dirty 2-D firetruck). He was broken when we cut the cake up- guess your handsome boys are more used to see cake creations ending on plates ;-).
@ everybody that has never used fondant before just like me, dare it, with Ann’s Instructions it’s really easy!
Hi Ann, loving ur website
Hi my son will be 4 in a couple of weeks and has asked for a fire truck cake. I have no prior experience in using any type of icing especially fondant. Would u think it might be too ambitious for someone like me to attemp? I’m mostly worried I will not find all the ingredients in the supermarket
Hi Mariam, give yourself plenty of time and have fun. There are so many cakes in the comments from people who have never used fondant before and they do such a good job.
Hi Leonie, I put all of my cakes in the fridge. The only time i have ever had problems with fondant was when I decorated a frozen cake and while the cake was defrosting there was so much condensation that it made the fondant soggy. But it seems to be fine in the fridge.
Just wanted to thank you for posting this tutorial. My little man is Fireman Sam crazy at the moment. I’m not at all confident in the kitchen but I gave this a run and it worked out great. Thanks for helping make my little man’s birthday so special, I really appreciate it 🙂
That’s great dragonlore and well done 😀
Hi Ann,
I wanted to say thank you for uploading this wonderful tutorial! I made this cake for my sons 2nd birthday and he was so impressed – I think I’ve just made mum of the year 🙂
You’re tutorials are fantastic, thank you for sharing!!
x M
thanks michelle
I just bought the template and have a question: what is the actual size of the firetruck? I printed but look a bit small. I just whant to do it exactly as the one in the video.
print it out A4 angelamo
I will be attempting this cake for my sons birthday next month. The tutorial seems very helpful. I bought the fondant made by Wilton’s. Is that okay to use. Also how did you make the gray ???? Oh one more question, how far in advance can I make the fondant pieces and freeze them, or is the day before decorating better
Thanks so much
just a little bit of black colouring into white fondant
Hey

Hi Jane, A4
Hi Ann
I want to know what color of fondant you used for the hose of fire truck?
Please reply me………

Hi Ann
Please can you tell me how much you would charge for a cake like this? I have someone asking me to make this cake but have no clue on how to price it?!
Thanks so much for your help!
Maria
Hi maria, It varies so much from country to country I’d suggest looking up 3d cake artists in you area and see how much stye charge for cakes of similar detail. The main costs are your time 😀
Great video Ann ,I am going to make the same cake for my son’s birthday. I have not worked with fondant before . Can you recommend a type of fondant for a beginner like me (which is easier to work with ).Thanks a lot
If you were my mum i would want you to make me a bat-mobile or gotham city cake
I can’t wait for someone to request a fire engine cake! Looks amazing!
Hi love this wish I had seen it a few weeks ago – I have made my cake and covered in red fondant about to decorate but limited colours and getting frustrated ! Oh well x
Hi – This tutorial is fab! I have been tasked by my nearly 4year old to create a “Fireman Sam” cake for his party on Sunday & this has helped me greatly. Would baking the cake tonight (Friday), leaving it to cool before wrapping in cling film & storing to decorate tomorrow be ok? Someone did mention about popping it in the fridge after being in cling film but wasn’t 100% sure.
Hi Claire, how did it turn out? You’re better off waiting for it to cool then putting in an airtight container (not in the fridge).
Absolutely thumbs up!!!! I love the tutorial but the best part by far is your little fire man’s huge smile!!!! Thank you for sharing!
thanks Tesei 😀
