My Little Pony Cake Rainbow Dash

My little pony, my little pony. What is friendship all about? If you know the song, sing along and get baking because this cake will be popular in your household. It’s covered in m&m’s and only the tiniest bit of fondant for the details. And I’ve developed a brand new frosting recipe for you try.
To make the My Little Pony Cake you will need
Serves 35 people.
If you would like it to serve less people make half the quantity of cake and only make it one layer high.
Cake
1 1/2 quantities of chocolate cake baked into 3 trays 15inch (38.1 centimetres) x 10inch (25.4 centimetres) x 1inch (2.54 centimetres)
Jello frosting recipe
2 packets jello (jelly) 85g (3 ounces) each preferably blue for this cake but can be any flavour.
750millilitres (25.36 fluid ounces) cream (35% fat) (what type of cream should I use)
700g (24.69 ounces) compound white chocolate
Here is a brand new frosting recipe that I invented for you.
Place the powdered jelly into a saucepan and add the cream. Give it a good stir and leave it unheated for around 5-10 minutes for the gelatin to bloom.
Turn on the heat and stir until all the gelatin and the sugar are dissolved and it just starts to boil.
Turn off the heat and add the compound white chocolate, stir until melted.
Pour into a bowl and place in the fridge for a couple of hours to chill. Whip it up and you’ll get a beautiful smooth fluffy frosting in the colour and flavour of your jello.
M&M’s
360g (12.7 ounces) pale blue M&M’s
270g (9.52 ounces) blue and 75g (2.65 ounces) blue mini M&M’s
90g (3.17 ounces) yellow and 15g (0.53 ounces) mini yellow M&M’s
90g (3.17 ounces) red and 15g (0.53 ounces) mini red M&M’s
90g (3.17 ounces) green and 15g (0.53 ounces) mini green M&M’s
135g (4.76 ounces) orange and 15g (0.53 ounces) mini orange M&M’s
90g (3.17 ounces) purple M&M’s or smarties
Cover the cake board in foil and add one and a half tray cakes, cover in a thin layer of frosting and then another layer of 1½ cakes.
Print out a picture of rainbow dash cake size. Place it on the cake and cut around it using a serrated knife.
Cover the whole cake in a thin crumb coat of frosting and then once that has set add another layer of frosting over the top.
Add the M&M’s starting with mini m&m’s for the outline
Make the eye and rainbow on the hip from fondant, see video for instructions. Add into place on the cake.

Hey Ann I was wondering what is the size of your picture of Rainbow Dash I’m making a Twilight one so I was wondering about the size thank you
Hi Catherin, If you look at Ann’s template, she uses 4 A4 pages to create the design. If you print them out at actual size and not reduced, you can get the measurements of the cake.
My 3 year old loves this cake. So grandma and I decided to make this for her birthday. Pit we have a problem. Two of my brother in law hate chocolate but love white chocolate. We had the idea of using skittles for the tail for people who don’t like chocolate but do you have any idea on the cake itself?
Hi Kelly, Try using the Perfect Sponge recipe instead: https://www.howtocookthat.net/public_html/sponge-cake-recipe/. Ann uses this for most cakes that need to be shaped. It should work well. You will need a similar quantity to the chocolate cake. If you want to swap the M&M’s for something else, it will depend on what is available where you are. You can get white chocolate ‘beanies’ in some places. Another option might be to use jelly beans or you can get what we call here ‘white chocolate freckles’ (they are also sometimes called speckles or jewels). These have a white chocolate base and sprinkles on top. You can get these in blue, pink, orange, green just about whatever colour you might want. Honestly if it just 2 people who don’t like milk chocolate, I would just have one section decorated on the head and tail decorated with something you know that they would eat.
What cake pan did you use?
Hi Janine, Ann used 1 and 1/2 quantities of chocolate cake baked into 3 trays 15″ x 10″ x 1″.
I frosted cupcakes with the frosting, should i keep them in the fridge or will it be fine in a sealed container? also, i used heavy whipping cream since light whipping cream is very hard to find in the USA. it turned out pretty good, just need more time in the fridge.
What if i don’t have those sized trays… biggest i have is 9×13
Hii !
First i just want to say : this cake is really amazing and i want make the same things for my friends but i have a problem.
I live in France and i don’t know where i can find M&M’s because we don’t have a M&M’s Shop.
Maybe you know a website which could deliver me this?
Sorry my english is very bad
Hi Snow. M& M’s are available in france if you search for them online. You could use ‘smarties’ instead or sometimes they are called chocolate beanies or milk chocolate candy. You can also purchase similar things on Amazon.
Hey I just have to say how amazed I am at your designs. I was also wondering where you got such a large variety of m&m’s from?
Hi Amy, Ann actually bought a few standard packets from the supermarket and sorted them into the colours. You can also order this type of candy in a number of different quantities and in a variety of individual colours.
What type of chocolate cake do I whose
Hi Modhi, Ann uses this chocolate cake recipe: https://www.howtocookthat.net/public_html/best-chocolate-cake-ever/
There is a link to this in the method.
For the frosting why does the white chocolate have to be compound white chocolate?
Hi Olivia, Compound chocolate sets firmer and is usually cheaper. You can use real chocolate, but you will be adding a lot of flavour to the mix, so you won’t miss the chocolatey taste of real chocolate when the compound one is used.
Can you make a soccer ball with some glittery outlines?
What a beauty! Such a creative touch 🙂

Can you make a my little pony pinkie pie cake please?????!!!!
Hi Ann, Long time fan, first time commenter. Just a question about the frosting. How does it store compared to buttercream? Can it be frozen and reworked or best not to?
Thanks so much for sharing your recipes with us 🙂
Hi Nikki, Ann hasn’t had the opportunity to explore this yet as this cake was consummed on the same day. It is similar to a ganache so should be freezable but as we haven’t actually trialled this, it would be good for you to experiment before you need to rely on it.
trop, trop, trop beau comme d’hab! vivement vendredi prochain……..
cordialement, jo
Merci!
Hi Ann, I love you website and channel I’ve been trying my hand in the kitchen lately. Could I suggest making an easter related dessert since it’s coming soon?
if i were to use box cake mix ( i am in a bit of a rush) how many would i need
Hi Eliza, it will depend on the quantity of mix your box cake produces. If the box mix produces one 8 inch round cake, you will likely need 3-4 boxes.
Hi!
I’m a very huge Spanish fan of your work!!
Can you make a cake about Star Wars?
It would be amazing!!
I’m waiting for you answer!!
Thank you!!
Hi Paula, Ann has one star wars cake at the moment. Check it out hear: https://www.howtocookthat.net/public_html/star-wars-atat-cake/
Hey Ann!
Just wanted to say hi, and that I think you are a great baker and artist. Thank you for inspiration in baking.
Thanks for the feedback Kristy.
Hi Ann,
Do you think this frosting will work on cakes with fondant?
Can it work with regular milk chocolate instead?
Love your channel!
Thanks for the good ideas!!
Jennifer from Israel 🙂
Hi Jennifer, Ann says the frosting will work with fondant and you can use milk chocolate, though the colour will be impacted. The results may differ if you use compound chocolate rather than real chocolate.
Ann, ive just realised you no longer have the catchy song at the end of your videos 🙁
Hi Sara, it depends on the week, I have it some weeks and not others.
if i were to make this cake how many box cakes would i need
Hi Eliza, If you are using a brand of mix that makes one 8 inch round cake, you would need at least 3 boxes to make a similar quantity. It all depends on the brand and the quantity of cake that mix will produce. Perhaps use at least 4 to ensure you have sufficient cake.
