Fortnite Cakes Gravity Defying Crystals
This is not sponsored I just enjoy playing this game. Apparently millions of other people who are much better at shooting than me like it too. I was inspired to try and make the gravity defying crystals, which turned out to be much harder process than I first envisaged.
There seems to be a lot of articles out there that say the following foods glow under black light:
pineapple – nope
honey – not at all
energy drink with riboflavin – not even a little glow
From my experiments edible things that do actually glow under black light are:
tonic water – glows white
fluorescent food colouring – glows really well but has a horrid metallic after taste so I never use it in food.
To make your own gravity defying crystals you will need:
200mL (6.76 fluid ounces) tonic water (check on the ingredients that it contains quinine, that is the magic ingredient that makes it glow).
12 gelatin sheets and extra bowl of water to soak them
4 Tablespoons sugar
200mL (6.76 fluid ounces) water
Open the tonic water and let it go flat (this makes it easier as you won’t have a heap of bubbles to scrape off the top).
Soak the gelatine sheets in water. Add the sugar to the 200mL (6.76 fluid ounces) of water and heat in the microwave until the sugar is dissolved. Squeeze the water out of the gelatine sheets and add into the warm sugar solution. Stir until the gelatine is melted. Let cool slightly then stir in the tonic water.
Pour into a rectangular tin lined with plastic wrap and place in the fridge to set.
Make batch of chocolate cupcakes. Crush up some Oreos in a food processor or if you don’t have one place them in a ziplock bag and bash them with a rolling pin.
For the frosting I used my chocolate buttercream recipe warmed up to make it softer and darker.
Slice your crystals as shown in the video above.
Make a hole in the top of each cupcake and spread with the warm buttercream. Dip in the crushed Oreos and then add a crystal to the top of each one.
Flick off the lights and turn on a lamp with a black light globe in it and dadahhh… they glow. You can purchase black light globes from most hardware stores. Why not let your teenager have a few mates around for all-night fortnite and have these for snacks.

I’m gonna make these to serve at all of my shady events…
I’ll be making these 7 days a week.
I’ll need a bucket and a mop to make these!
These crystals would pair perfect for a late night… am I right ladies??? That’s a WAP that’s a WAP (Way Amazing Powdery Crystal)
these crystals are amazing!! i can’t wait to make them myself. question, could i replace gelatine sheets with gelatine powder or just jello/jelly for crystals that don’t glow?
Hi Adeline, I believe jelly would work fine for a non glowing crystal.
Ann, why did you remove my comments. Bae! I’m just trying to protect you from them.
Zoey, ya crazy

MY MUMMY MADE THESE FOR MEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
The tonic water gave me a stomach bug 🙁
Bravo, Ann they glow so good!
Thanks Lara. Glad you like them.
I did try the crystal but it didn’t work so I made a cake instead (I’m 11 so it didn’t work very well) it’s for my little brothers birthday
Hi Emma, Well done on this amazing cake!
Hi Mick, this should make around 20 cupcakes.
What kind of gelatin sheets? What bloom or grade? Does it make a difference?
Hi Natalie, The stronger the strength of sheet gelatine the more it costs and the less it weighs per sheet (because you don’t need as much of it). Eg bronze weighs 3.3g/sheet, gold weighs 2g/sheet this is designed so the same number of sheets will set the same amount of liquid regardless of which one you are using.
This is awesome! I’ve been researching tonic water and I just found this recipe! My brother loves Fortnite so he wants me to make this for his birthday party, super excited to try it out!
An, you are a genius!!! I am going to have some fun with my kids this weekend!! First the bbq and then desert!!!
