Rainbow Tie Dyed Heart Surprise Cake

rainbow tie-dyed surprise cake

Rainbow tie-dyed heart surprise cake. A beautiful bright cake with a colourful surprise inside. You can swap the heart for any shape that you have a cutter for. Or you could make your own cutter using the instructions in the twitter dessert video. Right after I finished making this cake I cut my finger. I was using scissors to cut a plastic packaging strap, it came off all of a sudden, the scissors continued on their speedy journey and went through the very tip of my finger. Several hours later I was at the hospital because it was still bleeding, despite using pressure, elevation and all the normal things. Unable to stitch it the doctor predicted four weeks for it to heal over.  So if you see me sporting a bandage in next weeks video you’ll know why. Oh and don’t try and push scissors through thick plastic strapping.

To make the rainbow tie-dyed surprise heart cake you will need:

Coloured Hearts
Makes enough hearts for two cakes 22cm (8.66 inches) long each
heart or other shape cutter, mine was 7.5cm (2.95 inches) across and 7cm (2.76 inches) tall
3 packets vanilla cake mix
5 gel colours or you can use neon colours if you prefer

White Cake
2 packets vanilla cake mix

To Decorate
500g (17.64 ounces) White fondant
Frosting (I used the frosting that was in the boxes of cake mix)
colours as used for making the cake

This cake was requested by subscribers after seeing a similar styled cake on tablespoon.com which was designed by Hungry Happenings and inspired by HandmadeCharlotte.com. Concept used with permission from all three websites.

  1. Hi, I just want to make one loaf (cake). Do I half the whole recipe from 5 packet mixes to 2.5 or just the amount needed for the hearts? I would assume half the amount for the hearts, am I right? Thanks,

    • Hi Taiya. You will need 5 packet mixes as per the recipe, but you will end up with extra ‘hearts’.

  2. Hi I want to makebthus cake but I only need to make one. The recipe says it makes 2 im not sure if that means there will,be enough shapes for 2 cakes or it makes an actual 2 cakes. And which parts can i cut in,half for, one, cake? Help would be appreciated thank you.

    • Hi Corie, The mix for the heart shaped centre pieces, will make enough of these for 2 whole cakes. You can just keep frozen those you don’t use. The recipe itself makes one finished cake.

  3. Hiya! I made this cake and it was brilliant and my friends loved it! My brother wants a similar cake but with footballs in the middle, how would I make a football pattern?

    • Hi Dani, Just create or find a football shaped cutter.

  4. You use the temperature of the oven based on the cake mix you buy… And she did tell the size of her pan.

    • That’s it.

  5. Thanks for the awesome recipe. We did it with a guitar cutout – worked like a charm!

    • fabulous!

  6. Hi, me and my mum are making this cake and it went exellent thank you for inspiring me and im going to start my own YouTube channel for my youtube channel could i do a copyright of your emoji cheesecake as they make my mouth water as soon as i see them and they are delicious also could you get back to me as soon as possible thanks x

  7. That’s because she said to use whatever cake mix you have in your local supermarket. Therefore, each person would have different instructions for things like ingredients to add (some take different amounts of eggs or water, ect.), and also different times needed to cook and oven temperatures. It is unique to each cake mix, just look on the box.

  8. I made this cake with my little twist on it.

    • Hi Oriana, This looks great!

  9. Hiya – I’d love to know what brand of cake mix you used as I’m in Australia and not sure if I should go with a Betty Crocker vanilla or white choc or a greeens brand, or even home brand!
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Love your work 🙂

    • Hi Nancy, Ann is based in Australia, so just uses whatever is readily available in the local supermarket, just like the brands you mentioned. Each brand mixes a little differently but as long as you follow the instructions it should work fine.

  10. Hi Ann!! I love your videos so much! You are such a good baker!and you also make the coolest things!

    • U r a good baker!Yankee Cake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Plz:)

    • Thanks for the feedback Michaela. Ann has great fun making the videos!

  11. I am making this cake right now and everything is falling apart. I followed everything to the “T”, with the exception using a longer loaf pan and the frozen cats just have fallen over and there is not enough batter to cover it(used one extra box of mix) without it spilling all over the oven. Yes, I did put the aluminum in the pan. The figure in the middle cats were put in tight. I can’t serve this what so ever.

    • Hi Hilda, How dissappointing for you. if you use a longer tin, it adds more volume than you may have realized.. You would also need more of your inserts and need to ensure they are packed end to end as per the ‘hearts’, otherwise they will of course fall over. It sounds like you may have not had them packed firmly end to end. It also sounds like you needed more mix than the one extra box you used. Better luck next time around.

  12. can i do this with a recipe rather than cake mix

  13. How high do you heat the oven for the frosting and cake mix?

    • Hi Isabella, Refer to the instructions on your cake mix. It is usually around 180C.

      • Thank you so much!!!

  14. Hi Anne! I love your videos and cakes keep making more and more videos!

    • Thanks Isabella.

      • How long do you freeze the hearts?

  15. Hi Anne. Quick question. Exactally, how long are we cooking the batter each time we put it into the oven?

  16. Hi Erin, The quantity of cake is more than you think you will need as you have to cut out shapes and therefore lose a fair amount of cake. If you use a homemade cake mix it tends not to work so well, as you end up over mixing the batter by the time you have split it into the colours and remixed it. The cake ends up a bit chewy and tough.

  17. Hi, my question is how long do you bake the parts of the cake for? Do you just follow the temperature and time on the box? Thank you

  18. what kind of cake mix did you use because i don’t think my cake mix is that thick which will cause a issue i assume

    • I tried today with Greens cake mix and it is too runny to make the tie die. I would also like to know what cake mix was used to get that thicker consistency.

    • Hi Stephanie, Brands vary greatly from country to country, so best to select one you have readily available. If you think the mix will be too runny then the colours will likely run together. You could try adding a less liquid than the packet recipe suggests and check that the consistency looks similar to what appears in the video. You are best to experiment and note what works best with the packet mix available to you.

  19. How would I make this with mini basketballs in the middle ?

    • Hi Ashley, Ann doesn’t have a tutorial on that as yet but I have made a note of your request. Let us know if you come up with any great ideas.

      • Hi Ann! I was thinking of making this for a birthday party, but the birthday girl likes chocolate cake. Could I make the rest of the cake chocolate besides the heart?

        • Hi Josie, This should work fine. If you do it, post a photo so we can see how it turns out.

  20. Hi Ann! I am trying to make this cake with a frozen theme in a 9×13 cake pan. How long would I need to freeze the inside shapes??

    • Hi
