Rainbow Tie Dyed Heart Surprise Cake

rainbow tie-dyed surprise cake

Rainbow tie-dyed heart surprise cake. A beautiful bright cake with a colourful surprise inside. You can swap the heart for any shape that you have a cutter for. Or you could make your own cutter using the instructions in the twitter dessert video. Right after I finished making this cake I cut my finger. I was using scissors to cut a plastic packaging strap, it came off all of a sudden, the scissors continued on their speedy journey and went through the very tip of my finger. Several hours later I was at the hospital because it was still bleeding, despite using pressure, elevation and all the normal things. Unable to stitch it the doctor predicted four weeks for it to heal over.  So if you see me sporting a bandage in next weeks video you’ll know why. Oh and don’t try and push scissors through thick plastic strapping.

To make the rainbow tie-dyed surprise heart cake you will need:

Coloured Hearts
Makes enough hearts for two cakes 22cm (8.66 inches) long each
heart or other shape cutter, mine was 7.5cm (2.95 inches) across and 7cm (2.76 inches) tall
3 packets vanilla cake mix
5 gel colours or you can use neon colours if you prefer

White Cake
2 packets vanilla cake mix

To Decorate
500g (17.64 ounces) White fondant
Frosting (I used the frosting that was in the boxes of cake mix)
colours as used for making the cake

This cake was requested by subscribers after seeing a similar styled cake on tablespoon.com which was designed by Hungry Happenings and inspired by HandmadeCharlotte.com. Concept used with permission from all three websites.

  1. Hi Ann! I was wondering, if I made the heart white and then made the background green, would the green cake batter coloring seep into already baked white hearts, thus tinting the hearts green?

    • Hi Mel, Yes that could possibly happen a bit.

  2. Hello,
I couldn’t find the answer in the comments, so I hope I won’t repeat the question.
How much cake you can make out of one packet of vanilla cake mix? Because I would like to make the vanilla cake by my own and I have no idea how much I have to add to the colourful shapes and cake itself. I would be very grateful for the answer : ).
    Best regards!

    • Hi Suzanne, You may wish to trial this recipe with the packet cake mix first as the commercial mix handles the treatment and colouring much better than homemade cakes. I have found that one packet of commercial cake mix will usually make one small 7 inch cake.

  3. Hey Ann! I want to make this for my daughter’s birthday but I only want to make one cake therefore would the recipe change. If so please tell before I head to the store for everything.

Thanks for all the great videos. I love to bake and make desserts.

    • Hi Marisa, To make one cake you will need to follow the recipe as it is.

  4. What type of food colouring did you use

    • sorry i don’t remember the brand but it was neon food colouring 🙂

  5. merci beaucoup pour cette création c’est très beaux et merci surtout de tout l’effort que vous faite pour nous
    .

    • Merci Radia.

  6. I wanted to make this cake for my daughters 12th birthday. We made the hearts with no problem. But when I put the hearts into the vanilla cake mixture to cook it the hearts rise to the top of the cake. I have made it 2 times and the same thing has happened. How do I stop this from happening.??

    • Hi Kate, while it is not what usually happens, I have come across 2 other people who had a similar thing happen on this recipe or another that used a similar technique. I am wondering if it is to do with the consistency of the bake batter. Ann’s suggested solution was on the final bake to hold back some of the batter and 3/4 cook the hearts in the remaining cake batter. Take the cake out, pour the remaining batter on top of the cake covering any heart that has popped up and then put it back in the oven to finish cooking.

  7. some of your receipt’s looks great

  8. How many people can eat this cake?

    • Hi Lol, it will depend on how ig your serves are but you can expect to get at least 120-12 serves.

  9. What size pan did you use for the first hearts cake, and approximately how long did you bake it? I like this method more than the “bake another loaf, cut slices the thickness of your cutter, and hope for the best” suggestions out there, but my pound cake mix boxes (Betty Crocker) don’t provide instructions for a sheet/jelly roll pan. I realize each mix is different; I’m just looking for a starting point so I can improvise just a little. Thanks! for the great instructional video!

    • Oh, and another question! I’m hoping to make the colored design in the middle a few days ahead of a lunch I’m hosting so I don’t totally rip my kitchen to shreds baking two cakes the day before the lunch. Do you think 4-5 days in the freezer would be okay for the colored cake pieces, or is that too long?

      • That should be fine Liz.

    • Hi Liz, Ann used a tray that is 10 inch x 15 inches.

  10. What size cake mix did you use? In Canada our cake mixes make one 13.9 inch single layer cake or two 8×8 or 9×9 double layer cake. Also, after you add the hearts and remaining batter, how long do you cook the cake for?

    • Hi paige, the cake mix you mentioned will be fine. We can’t give a specific baking time for your finished cakes as it will depend on your oven and tin size. Check it around the 15 minute mark using a knife or skewer.

      • thank you so much, I love your videos!

  11. Could you do one for Valentine’s Day please!!!!!

  12. bit confused=bake heart mixture for how long & what size is the tray? How long do u have to freeze the heart shapes before baking in final cake mix, thanku.

    • Hi Kat, Use whatever tray you have. Once baked, cooled and cut to shape, freeze the heart shapes till they are frozen and hard. How long that takes will depend on your freezer. At minimum allow a couple of hours. It’s easiest if you freeze them overnight.

  13. How long should I leave the hearts in the freezer for ? Xx

  14. What kind of fondant did you use? Was it homemade store brand ?

  15. Hey Ann! ive watched your channel for a while and I was wondering if u could direct me to different frosting and fondant recipes that you use! I want to start using some of your ideas at my work. Thank you much!!

  16. What size pans did you use?

    • Hi Janine, for the finalcake, Ann used a dish 22cm along and 13.5cm wide.

  17. Hello. Which brand of the neon food colours have you used. I’m having a hard time finding it. Thanks. Love your videos.

    • Hi Razia, Ann got hers at a local cake store. She doesn’t have a particular brand that she recommends.

  18. How much fondant (grams) will you need to cover one cake?

    • Hi Alice, 500g of fondant should be plenty.

  19. How much fondant do you need to cover the cake?

    • Hi Anita, Ann used about 500g.

  20. What size liaf pan did you use?

    • Hi Anita, The loaf pan Ann used was approximately 22cm x 13.5cm x 8cm deep.
