Spongebob Cake Tutorial

sponge bob cake video tutorial howtocookthat

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Spongebob Squarepants! This weeks video tutorial shows you how to make a 3D spongebob cake in the style of the ‘spongebob out of water’ movie.

How To Cook That recently won a Taste Award for Best Food Program as well as Australia’s best cooking blog. Thanks everyone who nominated me 😀

To make the spongebob cake you will need

2 quantities of the red velvet cake baked in two trays 1.5cm (0.59 inches) deep x 38cm (14.96 inches) long and 25cm (9.84 inches) wide
A piece of paper 17.7cm (6.97 inches) x 7.8cm (3.07 inches) to use as a template for cutting your cake.

1 quantity of cream cheese frosting
2 quantities of buttercream frosting
Fondant:
yellow 1kg (2.2 pounds). I had approximately 300g (10.58 ounces) left over but you’ll need the extra to roll and drape over the cake
50g (1.76 ounces) black
brown 150g (5.29 ounces)
white 300g (10.58 ounces)
red 50g (1.76 ounces)
blue 50g (1.76 ounces)
Tylose power (used to make the fondant details dry out faster, but if you are making the details ahead of time, you do not need this)
optional: cream filled shortbread biscuits to make the ‘sand’ to cover the board

  1. Planning to make this tomorrow actually. Just curious, since the cake is in such a thin pan, how long and what temp would you suggest? Thanks! You did an amazing job! Love it.

    • G’day Cleo, in the trays I always give them 15 minutes, check the cake then give 5 more minutes if needed.

  2. Nice cake! How many servings would this cake be?

  3. Nice cake. How many servings would this cake serve?

    • Hi Rose, It would make around 20 serves depending on the size of the serve.

  4. is there a place that you can buy the Fondant

    • Hi Aranza, try baking stores and online cake decorating suppliers in your country.

  5. Where can I find the paper template for the spongebob cake

  6. Can you also use ganache instead of frosting between the cake layers??? And can you use less but thicker layers???

    • Hi Ilse, you could. Ann actually likes to mix ganache and frosting, whipping them together.

  7. In love with your videos, that’s my cake, what do you think?
    Thank you Ann❤❤

    • Great work Khawla. I particularly love the socks and shoes!!

  8. Ann, you’re amazing! Your tutorial was fantastic. So clear and well explained. The templates made it easy to see the ‘big picture’. Here’s my Spongebob. He was donated through Cake Angels. Thanks again.

    • Great work Kylie and good on you for supporting cake angels, they do a fabulous job!

  9. Hi. Just wondering how many layers are placed before the sticks and cake board are used before the next lot of layers are done.

    • Hi Shiralee, Ann did 5 or 6 layers before adding the supports and Board.

  11. This is a lovely tutorial and I want to try it in a few days. My question is how tall is the cake? I downloaded the PDF and it seems quite small and the spongebob pics was in half, please help

    • Hi Tipsy, If you print the PDF at 100% (no scaling and join so the pic is complete, you will get an accurate sense of the size of the cake.

  12. Hi i was wondering the sz/height of the cake. Is it roughly the height of an a4 piece of paper.

  13. Hi, I’ve got a question. Will this amount of cake be enough for a group of 18 kids? I printed your pdf and I have doubts…

    • Hi Agnieszka, It will all depend on the size of your serves. It should make 16-20 serves with ease. If you need a few extras, you could do additional cupcakes or ‘rocks’ around Sponge Bob, or even sit him on a layered cake (cake board support would be required to ensure Bob didn’t sink into the cake.)

      • Hi! Children ate half of the cake, so I was worrying unnecessarily. 🙂 And here is my SpongeBob. I must admit, your tutorials are great 🙂 Everyone was impressed.

        • Hi Agnieszka, Thanks for posting a pic. The cake looks amazing!!

  14. I made this cake for my sons 2nd birthday. Thanks to your tutorial and template it made the process sooo much easier!

    • Hi Shanequa, Your cake looks amazing! Well done!

  15. How about making a Sandy cake from Spongbob.

  16. where is the template for SpongeBob how do I download it

    • Hi Crystal, this is one of Ann’s older blogs and it has a PDF print out that is available direct from the page. It is a picture to use as a guide rthater than the detailed template that are available for more complex projects. If you click on the highlighted text on this line:

      It should open automatically.

  17. Can you use chocolate cake instead of red velvete cake? If you can use chocolate cake do you know any good recipes for chocolate cake? Xx

  18. Hello love your cakes. The first cake i made was the thomas the train cake and my boys loved it. I am planing on making the spoungebob cake and just wondering how much cake batter you used for each pan.

    • Hi Tony, For this recipe Ann used a double quantity of the red velvet cake, cooked in 2 plans. She just split the batter between the 2 pans.

  19. Hi Ann,
I intend to make this cake for my son’s 5th Birthday this weekend (only instead of red velvet my son is begging for a chocolate sponge).
Just a couple of questions, which frosting works best with the chocolate sponge? Can I still use cream cheese?
Also just wondering if you could let me know what the measurements are (length etc.) for his arms, legs, shoes and nose as I’ll be preparing the fondant details a couple of days ahead of the cake and don’t want to risk making them too short.
    Many Thanks

    • Hi Sarah, Ann made this cake quite a while a go and doesn’t have a detailed template due to the copyright restrictions on this figure. She recommends using the PDF as a guide for arm length. With the legs, leave the trouser part off and make them longer than you think you will need, as you can easily trim to suit the size of your body and add the trousers then. For the nose, we estimate about 10-11cm longer, but again you could make it a little longer and just aadjust before assembling. In regards to frosting, Ann would use a mix of 1 part chocolate ganache and 2 parts chocolate buttercream frosting and mix them together as the frosting.

      • Thank you so much! I gave it whirl and think it came out quite well! I’ve now been asked to attempt an Elsa cake and a minion cake by friends of mine for their kids birthday haha! Your tutorials are the best! Amazing. Thanks again x

        • Hi Sarah, Sponge Bob turned out great! Well done!

          • Hi Ann Sponge bob turned great Good job!

          • That is great to hear Christenelle. Well done.

        • Nice cake!

  20. I would also like to know the dimensions of this cake. Thank you.
