Hand Bag Cake Tutorial

Inspired by a $20K lively pink hand bag, this handbag cake is a delicious and affordable alternative for those of us who would never dream of spending that much on an accessory.

I always smile when people comment on YouTube that ‘she must have made it hundreds of times before’.  The video you see is actually me making the cake for the first time. So who taught me to do a zip like that? Well I just looked at a zip on a handbag and try to figure out what else has evenly-spaced thin parts that could make those little indents?  I did some tests on scraps of fondant until I had it down. The aluminum flashing for the pattern is a similar method that I used to make my Twitter and iPad cakes.  You can actually buy patterned texture mats, but they’re expensive and most people will only make a cake like this once, so this is a much cheaper alternative. Hope you enjoy.

To make the cake you will need:

Hand Bag Cake Template with guides for cutting the cake and fondant pieces.
This cake 25cm (9.84 inches) x 19cm (7.48 inches) x 11 cm (4.33 inches) (Length x Height x Width) and will make about 35 serves.

If you want the a bigger cake you will need to enlarge the template and increase the quantities accordingly.

Double the quantity of the chocolate cake recipe baked in two trays 38cm (14.96 inches) x 25cm (9.84 inches) x 2.5cm (0.98 inches)
400g (14.11 ounces) red fondant
1400g (49.38 ounces) white fondant
200g (7.05 ounces) black fondant
To make the lively pink fondant mix the red and white fondant and add a tiny bit of yellow and blue gel colour.
edible gold luster dust
Shine spray (optional)
2 quantities of Chocolate Buttercream frosting mixed with 1 quantity of chocolate ganache

  1. hi please can you make a free printable copy of the templates because i am only 10 year old and having a lot of trouble making the brilliant cakes what you make love you so much and you are very insparational 🙂

  2. Hi Ann I just bought the template, And printed it out but looks very small, tomorrow is my birthday and want to make it the way you made yours what should I do about the size. You are indeed doing a great job thanks

    • hi lovelyne, the tempalte size is the size that I made, make sure you did not select ‘scale to fit page’ when you printed, just print it the size that it is.

  3. I order your template and it come out to small. can you help me with this

    • Hi yongdoker, the template is the size that the cake in the video is, which is based on the size of the actual alma bb bag. If you would like to make a larger cake you can enlarge the template

  4. Yo Ann nice cake… I want to make it but I want to use betty crocker cake mix (don’t laugh im not good at baking)… Can you tell me how many boxes I need? One box makes a 13″x9″ cake? Please help…

    • alright I just bought the template now im just waiting on you… I cant wait to get started! 🙂

      • hi kenny, it’s an automated system so you should have received an email containing a link to download the template. Please let me know if that didn’t come through & i will re-issue it 🙂

    • Hi Kenny my trays were 38×22 cm and by the sounds of what you are saying you are using 33×22 cm. Assuming they are the same height (2.5cm) yours is 3/4 the volume of mine. So instead of two trays you’d need a bit more than 2 1/2 trays and you’ll need to piece it together more as your template pieces will be bigger than the cake you caked.

  5. Hi Ann ,
I want to ask you about the fondant
what kind fondant did you use for these cake?
Also, I made the sponge cake and it was awesome

    • Hi Suzan I use all different brands depending on what the local cake decorating store has 😀

  8. Hello Ann! This is an amazing tutorial, I just purchased the template to use for my moms birthday and it seems rather small..does the cake actually work up to be larger? Thanks!

    • Hi Dominique just check that your printer has not ‘scaled to fit’. Print it at the size that it is without scaling and then it will make the cake the size shown in the video 😀

  9. I would like to know if the template is downloadable, I don’t mind paying for it.

    • Hi Arlene yes it is a download 😀

    • Hi Arlene, yes it is a download 😀

  11. This is beautiful! I was wondering if you can explain further in making the handle and buckle with out the buckle falling off. I didnt quite understand it. Thank you so much! Love your website and recipes!

    • hi ak, you need to place something under the buckle so that it sets on an upwards angle (how it will sit on the finished bag) rather than pointing straight down.

  12. Wow Ann, you’re amazing. I love baking but I must admit that I’ve not seen anyone as creative as you are. Loads of love:)

If you could let me know what part of the process it was not working for you that would be great 😀

  16. hey ann,

why can’t I buy the templates if I’m not from another country and why do we have to pay?

thankyou… Sascha (sas-sha) (because everyone pronounces it wrong 🙁 )

    • Hi Sascha you can buy the template from any country in the world it is a digital download so you can download it instantly upon payment. Why do you have to pay for ingredients when you go to the store? So that shop owner can run the store and pay his bills. Same principal applies here, running a website, filming youtube videos and editing them etc takes a lot of time and I like everyone else who works hard have bills to pay.

  17. Amazing!!! Definitely will try to bake and make it. I bought the template already. Also bought the template for the cars :-). Happy to know your web!

    • Wonderful Okki, make sure you upload a photo here in the comments when you’ve made it 😀
