Olaf Cake Frozen Disney Movie

frozen cake ideas movie reardon

“Hi, everyone. I’m Olaf and I love warm hugs!” Just like the hilarious character from Disney’s blockbuster movie Frozen, this Olaf cake will light up the faces of everyone at your next birthday party with his big smile. And when you add in delicious Italian meringue frosting for his snow, chocolate arms, Oreo encrusted buttons and adorable Starburst nose, then this little guy is sure to steal the show.

My Olaf cake recipe will serve approximately 8 people, but if you have more attending then you can scale him up. Just be aware if you make him bigger that you’ll need to add supports between the body and the head and the foot and the body (or Olaf will melt like a snowman in Summer). For instructions on adding supports to a 3D standing cake see the minion cake tutorial.

Olaf Cake Ingredients:

Cakes: I prefer the taste of fresh homemade cakes but if you are short on time then store bought is a fine alternative. To make Olaf cake you will need three 20cm (7.87 inches) round sponge cakes. If you’d like a heavier firmer cake then you will need to add supports (see minion cake tutorial)

Frosting: I used one quantity of Italian meringue frosting you can see the recipe and video tutorial for making it and 6 other frostings here. The Italian meringue icing is light and fluffy, it holds its shape best when using fresh eggs.

10 white marshmallows
icing or confectioners sugar
8 orange starburst lollies
black fondant (approx 20g (0.71 ounces))
100g (3.53 ounces) Dark or milk chocolate (What chocolate should I use?)
1 packet mini oreos or 2 normal sized oreo biscuits

Round cake board and a wooden or plastic cake spike 1cm (0.39 inches) shorter than the height of your finished cake

  1. Thank you for the inspiration. I made olaf out of rice krispie treats. The bottom layer started to crack a little, probably needed to pack it tighter. Granddaughter loved it.

    • Well done Jo-Ann.

    Hi Ann,
I followed your Olaf instructions and fantastic tips which helped me produce this! I made him for my 3-yr old granddaughter Eva, who particularly liked walking around the party with Olaf’s tempered chocolate arms, one in each hand! Thank you so much, you made it all so easy!

When I’m making cakes, it usually consists of piping or creating a buttercream transfer. Tried doing this the night before my nephews 5th birthday party and it was a complete disaster. Definitely gave me a good laugh ’cause it’s not my usual attempt.
I used a yellow box mix. I’m figuring it was just too heavy. As soon as I got his head on, everything just collapsed. Probably should’ve just used your sponge cake recipe. Other than my mishap, your cakes are very awesome! Definitely will be using your website again to spark my creativity.

  6. how much confectioners suger do you need? or is that a stupid question?

    I love your cooking channel❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  8. My cake was okay for the 2 “balls” but my “head” couldn’t stay upright – it crumbled – it was a chocolate cake – maybe you need to use a “spongier” cake – any ideas why the “head” fell off the spike.

    • Hi Bree, yes that could be the cake that you use, was it a very heavy cake recipe? If so you may need to support with a mini cake board see the minion cake for instructions on that

We used ur vanilla cake recipe you used for the minion cake to do the Olaf cake! We have done everything your way, and it has crumbled under the weight:( a fallen crumble mess…bummer! We did bottom 15cm, middle and top of head 9cm, the 2 face pieces were 9 1\2cm:) and of course carved to make the shape! Please help:)

    • Hi Jen the minion cake is a heavier cake so would need supports, you’ll need a sponge cake for this one

  10. Hi, I just wondered how long this cake will stay fresh for once made/finished? and which parts can be done in advance?
    Thank you,

    • Hi Sam, I would make the is cake on the day of serving

  11. How do you cut this cake? Thanks!

  12. Hi Ann,
For the support, can I use a piece a carton that I cover it with aluminium foil ? And can I use chopstick instead of plastic cake spike ?
    Thank you,

    • Hi Alexis yes you can

  13. I am not known for making cakes. I may have started on something a little harder than I’m used to. Has been totally worth the laugh.
