The new Christopher Robin movie is not out in Australia yet, but the preview looked so adorably cute that it inspired me to make a Winnie the Pooh cake.

Family update: James is finally well enough to go back to school. He has been every day this week. Thanks again for your thoughts, kind comments and prayers and for all the lovely cards.

To make a 3D Winnie the Pooh Cake you will need:

Winnie the Pooh cake cutting template

 
3 x my rich chocolate cake recipe baked in four trays. My trays are 38cm (14.96 inches) x 25.4cm (10 inches).
6 x vanilla butter cream recipe or you can choose any flavour you like from the recipe page
2 cake boards for inside the cake and one base cake board (mine was 30cm (11.81 inches) square)
7 cake pop sticks
simple syrup (1/2 cup of sugar mixed with 1/2 cup of water heated in the microwave until the sugar is dissolved)
Fondant
I coloured white fondant using gel colours to make the following:
100g (3.53 ounces) Orange Fondant for honey
300g (10.58 ounces) Red Fondant
750g (26.46 ounces) Pooh Skin Colour
300g (10.58 ounces) Blue Fondant
100g (3.53 ounces) Mid Blue Fondant
50g (1.76 ounces) Light blue fondant
40g (1.41 ounces) Black fondant (I buy black fondant instead of colouring it because it is easier)
Green gel Colouring for grass

For all 3D fondant cakes you need to allow yourself plenty of time. Do not start baking the night before the party or you’ll be up ALL night. I’d suggest on day 1 bake the cakes, let them cool, cover in plastic wrap, print and cut out the templates and cut cake boards to size. Day 2 level and cut the cake layers, stack with simple syrup and buttercream with the cake boards, cover in buttercream (You can stop at this stage if you want and leave it in the fridge until the next day or keep going). Cover in fondant and details and store in the fridge. The next day, party!

    Just an FYI, I clicked on the red print “vanilla buttercream…” and it gave me an error. juuuuuuust letting you know :O); I was able to just type it into the search box with success.

    I tried making the Winnie the Pooh cake and followed the video to the letter. My cake began to tilt to the side, as well as the overhang on layer 2 dropped. Any suggestions. I did use cake pop sticks, and cake boards as you suggested. It was a true disaster! Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

    I can’t be the only person confused as hell about what colors were used for the honey and pooh’s skin. Please help!

    I LOVE this idea my son loves winnie the pooh. But is there a way to size the template/cake down to feed around 15? Several people at the party will be diabetic or have restrictions so wont be eating the cake

    • Hi Andi, you can scale down the template when you print it – usually printer settings will allow you to choose a scale percentage. Calculating quantities of cake etc will be tricky and decorating smaller cakes can be harder as all the details are finer. My neighbours are always happy for cake. Or leftovers can be sliced and frozen.

    Hi i love the winnie the phoo cake i want to do one with the bee hive hanging from a tree branch over the top of the cake any ideas on how to get it to hang and that part doesnt have to be from cake .

    • Hi Kay, You will need to use a wooden cake board and a threaded rod like I used in this cake https://www.howtocookthat.net/public_html/3d-unicorn-cake-tutorial/. As long as the base board is big enough and heavy enough you can then add a hex nut, a strong wooden/metal horizontal support (for the branch) and another hex nut to hold it in place. The upright support can be covered by cake and fondant and turned into the tree trunk. For the part that is hanging down have a hole drilled in the horizontal support where you want the hive. Put a threaded rod through it long enough to hang down to the bottom of the hive – use a hex-nut at the top of the rod to stop it falling straight through the hole, and another one on underside of the horizontal board to support it in place. Add a cake board with the hive shaped cake on it at the bottom of the hanging threaded rod and use hex nuts to secure it. ? hopefully you can picture that ?

    • Hi Mary, It will feed around 36 people. Finished it is 20cm tall to the top of the head.

    Hi Ann,
    This cake is absolutely amazing, I always have trouble with my fondant tearing or going dry, what is it that you are using to spray onto the fondant before you use it, your fondant looks nice and elastic. what fondant brand do you buy also please?

    • Hi Marie, I use vegetable cooking oil spray, it soaks into the fondant after about 10 minutes – just stops it drying and cracking while I’m putting it on the cake. I usually buy satin ice.

    Hi, I have never carved a cake before, they are usually just round or square but I’m really interested in trying it. Do you think this would be okay for a beginner? If not, is there a cake design that is easier to carve? Is it possible to make the template pieces a little smaller for a smaller cake? I’m used to making and using marshmallow Fondant so I feel comfortable with that part. Thank you!

    • Hi Holly, Yes I think you could follow this tutorial. As for shrinking the template the only difficulty you will face is that it is made to work with the height of the cake layers. So depending on how small you make it you may need to for example skip every second layer – size it up with your front template to see. Would definitely be easier to do the full size.

    Hi Anne What size cake boards is required please. Also do i need to bake 3 of your chocolate cake recipes. thank you very much

    • Hi Debra, This cake board was about 30cm x 30cm but when you have your template, look at the base template for the bottom layer of cake and that will give you a rough idea of how the cake will sit on your board. You can always go a larger cake board if desired. The recipe does require 3 batches of the chocolate cake recipe.
