Hand Bag Cake Tutorial

Inspired by a $20K lively pink hand bag, this handbag cake is a delicious and affordable alternative for those of us who would never dream of spending that much on an accessory.

I always smile when people comment on YouTube that ‘she must have made it hundreds of times before’.  The video you see is actually me making the cake for the first time. So who taught me to do a zip like that? Well I just looked at a zip on a handbag and try to figure out what else has evenly-spaced thin parts that could make those little indents?  I did some tests on scraps of fondant until I had it down. The aluminum flashing for the pattern is a similar method that I used to make my Twitter and iPad cakes.  You can actually buy patterned texture mats, but they’re expensive and most people will only make a cake like this once, so this is a much cheaper alternative. Hope you enjoy.

To make the cake you will need:

Hand Bag Cake Template with guides for cutting the cake and fondant pieces.
This cake 25cm (9.84 inches) x 19cm (7.48 inches) x 11 cm (4.33 inches) (Length x Height x Width) and will make about 35 serves.

If you want the a bigger cake you will need to enlarge the template and increase the quantities accordingly.

Double the quantity of the chocolate cake recipe baked in two trays 38cm (14.96 inches) x 25cm (9.84 inches) x 2.5cm (0.98 inches)
400g (14.11 ounces) red fondant
1400g (49.38 ounces) white fondant
200g (7.05 ounces) black fondant
To make the lively pink fondant mix the red and white fondant and add a tiny bit of yellow and blue gel colour.
edible gold luster dust
Shine spray (optional)
2 quantities of Chocolate Buttercream frosting mixed with 1 quantity of chocolate ganache

  1. Hello Ann,
I love your tutorials! I want to make this purse but for 50 serves, what do you suggest for the size of the cake pan and the quantity of the cake chocolate recipe.
    Thank you
Pd:2 years ago I made the Lighting McQueen you have in your page and came out great :), you are the best!

  2. Hi.I also purchased the template and instead of the size being 25x19x11 it is 20x15x9 which looks smaller than the one in the video. The handle and padlock look especially smaller. I printed it correctly and I’m not sure why it appears too small! Any ideas?

    • Hi Farina, If you have printed the template at the correct size (100%) then the template will be right. The finished cake will be bigger as you have to add buttercream and fondant over the cake.

    • Hi.Thanks for the template and the tutorial. Without it I wouldn’t have been able to make my cake. I made a different cake but it was still helpful. You do make it look extremely easy 🙂

  8. Hi!, I do have problems with the template, the size is not the one that you show. Could you tell me why? I am doing something wrong? I download the template and I printed Idid not touch anything…. my size is 20x15x9. Thanks

    • 20cmx15cmx9cm

    • Hi Gisela, Just make sure your printer is not scaling it to fit. Check your printer settings to ensure it is printing at 100percent. Those measurements for the template are very close to what they should be. The finished cake with frosting and fondant will be around 25x19x11

  9. Hi Anna, This is wonderful how can I get the tempalate.? I’m from Nigeria

    • Hi Funmilayo, you may not be able to downlad the template from Nigeria due to international restictions.

  10. Brilliantly explained tutorial. Please can you tell me what make of gold lustre dust you used? Thanks

    • Hi Niki, Brands of lustre dust vary from country to country. In some places it is called Pearl Dust. The brand Ann uses is made in Australia and unlikely to be available overseas. Wilton has a good ange and it should be available in the UK.

  15. HI!, Im making a cake for 25 people would this size of your cake be enough for the size cake that I need?

  16. How is one to enlarge the whole template to create the large size cake length 15″. otherwise how can I enlarge the handle templates the front of the cake etc…

    • Hi Mike, The best way to adjust the size of your template is to either print it or photocopy it at 150% of the original size.

  17. Hi Ann, I’m from the UK and have just downloaded this template but I am having trouble sourcing the right size baking trays. Can you tell me where I can purchase them? Many Thanks, Bryony

    • Hi Bryony, Ann has collected her trays over many years of baking, so it would be hard to say where they were purchased from. Ann recommends Baker’s Secret Bakeware but use whatever you can get that is similar in size. It doesn’t have to be exactly the same.
