Hand Bag Cake Tutorial

Inspired by a $20K lively pink hand bag, this handbag cake is a delicious and affordable alternative for those of us who would never dream of spending that much on an accessory.

I always smile when people comment on YouTube that ‘she must have made it hundreds of times before’.  The video you see is actually me making the cake for the first time. So who taught me to do a zip like that? Well I just looked at a zip on a handbag and try to figure out what else has evenly-spaced thin parts that could make those little indents?  I did some tests on scraps of fondant until I had it down. The aluminum flashing for the pattern is a similar method that I used to make my Twitter and iPad cakes.  You can actually buy patterned texture mats, but they’re expensive and most people will only make a cake like this once, so this is a much cheaper alternative. Hope you enjoy.

To make the cake you will need:

Hand Bag Cake Template with guides for cutting the cake and fondant pieces.
This cake 25cm (9.84 inches) x 19cm (7.48 inches) x 11 cm (4.33 inches) (Length x Height x Width) and will make about 35 serves.

If you want the a bigger cake you will need to enlarge the template and increase the quantities accordingly.

Double the quantity of the chocolate cake recipe baked in two trays 38cm (14.96 inches) x 25cm (9.84 inches) x 2.5cm (0.98 inches)
400g (14.11 ounces) red fondant
1400g (49.38 ounces) white fondant
200g (7.05 ounces) black fondant
To make the lively pink fondant mix the red and white fondant and add a tiny bit of yellow and blue gel colour.
edible gold luster dust
Shine spray (optional)
2 quantities of Chocolate Buttercream frosting mixed with 1 quantity of chocolate ganache

  1. Hi, I’ve printed the templates but they seem very small. Less than 20cm across for base layers, but states 25cm. Just cut round them a bit bigger?

    Thanks

    • Hi Hannah, just make sure that your printer is printing it at 100% scale. It should print over several pages & then you just piece it together 🙂

  7. I just bought the template and I’m hoping to bake this cake on Sunday. Did you had tylose powder to the fondant before you used it?

    • if you have time to leave it to dry then you don’t need to … but if you are in a rush then yes you’ll need to do that

  8. Lovely bag is such inspiration

  9. Lovely bag, and I wish I could learn how to do that.

  10. Hi Ann, great video. Can I ask, if you are doing a bag with silver hardware instead of gold, would you still start with black fondant before using lustre dust, or is that only for gold?

    • Hi Siobhan, you could use gold or white depending on the look you prefer.

  11. Hello Ann, my 10-year old and I enjoy your tutorials! We are truly amazed! Do you make musical instruments cakes, too? My 10-year old plays the violin and clarinet. (I play the viola). Her sister (my eldest daughter) also play the violin. We would like to get some tips and hits on how to make a violin cake and maybe also the clarinet – would be fun gifts for our wonderful teachers 🙂

Please keep the tutorials coming! Thank you!
PS. we live in Norway 🙂

    • Hi Tone, Ann doesn’t have cakes like these on her blog as yet, but you can always design your own! it is great that you appreciate your teachers.

  12. Hello. I know its not the same, but i used your recipe and templates from LV video. Husbands sister was so much happy 🙂

    • Hi Linda, Your bag cake is super impressive. We love all the detail and creativity. Well done!

  13. Hi ann, Perhaps I did not look well enough but could you please tell me what the size of your baking trays are. (the ones you made the chocolate cake with) thanks

    • Hi Stefan, Ann provides this information on the blog page: two trays 38cm (14.96 inches) x 25cm (9.84 inches) x 2.5cm (0.98 inches)

  14. Made this cake to donate to one of my local rabbit club canteens. Was a big hit 🙂 I did some things a little different. Mixed the gold lustre with Rose spirit to paint it on, and hand painted confectioners glaze on instead of the aerosol spray as a cheaper option. This is my 4th time using fondant to ice a cake. I usually only use fondant to add to my gumpaste for toppers and flowers. I think it turned out very nice.

    • Hi Jes, Great job. Your cake looks fantastic. Very realistic!

  15. You rock. Thanks a million for this tutorial. I’m writing from Camroon, Africa and just subscribed to your channel. Learning so much from it

  16. Hi Ann, you made this looked really easy, you are amazing. I really want to try this out but what recipe for the fondant you use in making this cake? Thanks.

  17. Hi Ann
I am ready to cover the cake with fondant but I am struggling to find an ‘aluminum’ alternative to create the textured effect. I do have a crocodile textured rolling pin but am uneasy about using that as I could distort the pattern when cutting off the excess fondant, also I would not be able to use smoothers on the bag. Do you have any advice for me using the rolling pin?
    Anne

    • Hi Anne, Ann thinks that the rolling pin should be fabulous. Obviously the less you have to handle the fondant, the lesslikely you are to get distortion. Ann suggests perhaps doing one side of the cake at a time rather than putting the all the fondant on in one go.

  18. Hello, I have a 33cm x 22.8cm x 5cm, is this going to require more than just two trays as well?

    • Hi Kea, I think you could just get through with those trays, the cake slab will be slightly deeper and may take a little longer to cook. The template is made to suit the sized tray mentioned so just lay out the pieces on the slab to be sure they fit okay before you cut.

      • I want to make the cake smaller, how do I make the size smaller, zoom to 25%?

        • Thank you for your response.

        • Hi Kea, This is not a large cake. It will be difficult to adjust the sizing. If you want to make it smaller than the finished size dimensions given, then perhaps aim for 75 or 50% scaling.

  19. Thank you so much for this video! I am a beginner and this is just my 4th cake but my 1st carved cake It ended up sagging to he back a bit when I put the fondant on but overall it came out great!

    • Hi Tayla, This cake looks Brilliant. Well done!

  20. what do you use to get the print pattern on the cake

    • Hi Erica, Ann explains this on the video and in the first paragraph of the blog page above.

      • I don´t find the pattern.

        • Hi Laura, Are you asking about the template, this is downloadable on purchase via the link provided. Once downloaded, you should locate the file in your downloads folder.
